01/03/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Up front in her kennel, tail wagging and a smile lighting up her face, Marni was hoping for a walk and got one! Easily leashed she hops out of her kennel making a beeline for the door and then going potty the moment we were outside. Whew! She pulls hard on the leash so will benefit from a harness and/or some leash training, shows off her sit for some treats and makes soft eye contact. She’s a gorgeous black beauty, and just like my Aunt Lotte, has a chin full of white whiskers. So cute! Marni poses for pictures not minding being tethered, but it’s off leash in a pen where we have the most fun. She immediately started playing with a toy, amusing herself running around, bringing it onto my lap and then tossing it around again. I didn’t even have a chance to put a neckpiece on her she was having so much fun. She’s beautiful enough without one anyway, she says. Marni comes when called, enjoys some treats which she takes softly after figuring out that she has to drop the toy in order to get them. I loved watching the wheels in her head spinning as she figured that out! Tail waggy, so friendly, paws in my lap with her toy, she’s lively and fun. When she had exhausted the merits of the soft toy she then had fun shredding it. Greeting staff that came to say hello with a happy tail wag, Miss Marni is friendly to all. Looking for a new home that’s lively and fun, and where toys are in plentiful supply, Marni is hoping you’ll ask to meet her today.
12/29/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Unaltered, Owner Surrender Bite history: Yes. Marni has bitten a 10-year-old child. Marni was chasing a pet parrot and the child corrected her by pointing a finger in the dog’s face and tapping her on the nose. Marni grabbed the child’s wrist and shook it, leaving two punctures. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Look: 3. Dog is focused away from the Assessor, will not turn head towards Assessor. Sensitivity: 3. Dog is not fearful and is struggling to get away. The dog is not focused and is in constant movement, unconnected to the Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog quickly pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog quickly pulls back her paw. Toy: 3. Dog takes away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is stiff. Summary: Marni was focused away from the Assessor throughout the assessment. She would not turn toward or acknowledge the Assessor at all. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: During her stay at the care center, Marni has exhibited on-leash reactivity to other dogs (pulling hard, barking), so she is muzzled for her off-leash interaction. She rushes into the pen, slightly tense but appears to want to engage. She lacks social skills and does not stop running/soliciting from the helper dog despite him being clearly uncomfortable and running away from her. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/16/16 During Marni’s initial exam she allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL:
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced Adult Only Home _X_No children (under 13): Marni bit a ten year old child in her previous home. She should live in a home without children. Potential challenges: _X_ Poor bite inhibition (Marni bit a child in her previous home, holding onto the child’s wrist and leaving two punctures. Adopters should be aware of Marni’s quick escalation to biting, possibly without warning. The bite occurred while the child was correcting Marni and therefore Marni should not be given any harsh corrections or punishments. This is something that should be worked on using positive reinforcement training.) _X_Resource guarding (Marni became stiff when in possession of a toy on her behavior assessment. This shows a potential for possessive behavior. Adopters should leave Marni alone when she is in possession of toys, food, or treats and never try to forcibly remove anything from her mouth. It is recommended that a positive reinforcement resource guarding protocol is followed and that “Drop It” and trade up games are used.)
