09/24/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Mia’s beauty turns a lot of heads…She seems to be part Collie and elegantly dressed in a perfectly groomed oreo coat. She is quiet in her kennel but comes readily to her door when she is called. She is leashed easily and a bit hesitant to walk through her noisy quarters. She is so sensitive. The fresh air and being leash free in the yard will do her good. Mia is fidgety, busy searching our large pen and may be hoping to exit…She is quite hand shy but eventually settles by me accepting caresses and acknowledging me with her beautiful eyes. Mia was left with us by her owner or finder without a word. We kind of suspect why…Mia suffers from seizures and of course, our veterinarians are attending to her. So will have an adopter or rescuer’s private animal doctor. Mia is so worth your attention. She is a brave little girl with a medical condition, left in a strange environment away from her family and so deserves your care and true love. Mia is at the Manhattan Care Center.
09/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/19/17 Unaltered Female, Owner Surrender SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/21/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back and whimpers. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back and whimpers. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Mia appeared a bit fearful at times during the assessment, backing away from the assessor and having a tense body. PLAYGROUP: 9/20: When introduced off leash to the male greeter dog, Mia is tense with raised hackles and a high tail. She follows while T’ing the shoulders of the other dog. 9/21: Mia continues to display tense body language and continues to follow while displaying this behavior. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Mia was very friendly. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/19/17 During her initial medical exam, Mia was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Mia so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Mia may be intimidated by young children. She needs a slow approach and time to warm up. Older, gentle children should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Mia is fearful at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Mia the option to walk away from any social interaction. Mia should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Mia’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Mia would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
