07/30/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: ‘We’re singing in the rain, just singing in the rain….’ Mia and I were serenading each other to the song Gene Kelly made famous as it was raining “cats and dogs” during our time together. But we had fun anyway. Miss Mia, fashionista that she is, happily donned a yellow raincoat, tail wagging and stealing kisses as I fastened it around her and off we go. She pulls hard on the leash and finding a place to go potty was her first priority. We then ducked under cover to take some photos and get to know one another. A tiny tan peanut in a perfectly groomed coat, Miss Mia was surrendered to us when her owner moved to a place not allowing pets. We’re told she’s lived with children newborn to 15 and is relaxed and playful, doesn’t like other female dogs but is tolerant of males, doesn’t guard her things, enjoys baths, is friendly to all, loves toys and playing tug, is housetrained and well behaved when left home alone. That’s quite an impressive resume! Mia gave me lots of kisses, wagged her tail at other dogs passing our little enclosure, greeted staff who came to admire her rain gear with a friendly tail wag, sat for treats, took them gently, and would occasionally jump for them doing a little spin in mid air (a taught trick perhaps?). Our little peanut, a proven family dog, is looking for a new home and is currently accepting applications. Come meet her today.
08/01/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mia came into our center as an owner surrender citing moving issues. It is reported she has lived with children ages newborn to 15 years old, relaxed and playful, exuberant. She spent time with other dogs and is said to growl at female dogs but is more tolerant of male dogs. Owner reports Mia is not bothered if anyone touches her Food, Toys, Treats. Mia reportedly is housetrained, well behaved when left home alone. Owner reports she knows the cues ‘sit’ and ‘come’. She is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and confident. During intake, Mia jumped up affectionately, wagging tail and wiggly body, allowed all handling. She darted out of kennel very quickly, became stiff when she saw dogs out on her walk. She jumped up onto assessor’s lap upon entering SAFER assessment room, licking counselor’s face. She leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, mouth open. She followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, became playful mid game, settled easily at end of game. She did not pull her paw back on both Squeeze attempts, licked assessor’s hand. Mia kept a firm grip on Toy, loose body. Owner reports she likes to play with chew toys and ropes and her favorite game is tug. When off leash with a male dog, Mia offers hard corrections to a sexually motivated male. She did not engage in play. The Behavior Team feels Mia would do best with an Experienced adopter. Any other resident dogs should have an in depth interaction before considering adoption. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, becomes playful mid game, settles easily Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, licks hand. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with a male dog, Mia offers hard corrections to a sexually motivated male. She did not engage in play.
07/30/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Mia is assertive when interacting, often standing tall and offering corrections/vocalizations for solicitation; however, she will continue to engage in play but direct it to her playstyle. Her owner reports she “spent time with other dogs and is said to be aggressive, she growls at female dogs but is tolerant of male dogs.” Based on the behaviors seen in shelter, the behavior department feels that her vocalizations and growling are a part of her playstyle, but a pre-adoption interaction should be done to ensure any resident dogs are comfortable with her playstyle. 7/30: When off leash with a male dog, Mia offers hard corrections to a sexually motivated male. She did not engage in play. 8/6 update: Mia is assertive and pushy when engaging with a social, playful male. She will bounce at the helper dog, barking then offer correction if he reciprocates.
