Merry
Hello, my name is Merry . My animal id is #16302. I am a female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old.
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 17-Dec-2017.
Merry is at risk for behavioral reasons. She is very nervous in the shelter, making her difficult to handle. Due to Merry’s discomfort with touch and novel stimuli, we suggest an adult-only home. Medically, we have no concerns for Merry, who presents as a healthy dog.

Summary:: Merry was very scared,
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Merry so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the car center, she displays a medium level of activity.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Although Merry is fearful with both familiar and novice handlers, she does warm up after slow approach. She will solicit attention and petting from handlers and take treats in a gentle manner. When exploring the yard she will return and check in with handlers, sitting close by and leaning in with soft body and soft eyes. Despite efforts to improve her in shelter behavior, Merry has only shown improvements outside of the shelter environment.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Merryis currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Merry gives clear warnings when she is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is a potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Merry, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Merry to initiate interactions with new people. She should never be forced to greet or to interact if she is not comfortable and soliciting attention.
