07/21/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/21/16 19:10 Mercy came into the shelter very energetically with a loose body and tail wagging. During intake Mercy was very energetic and although he was not timid or showing any signs of aggression he was very hard to control due to his size and energy level.
07/26/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Mercy was out to impress me, and he did! With a wagging tail and a big smile, this gorgeous boy shakes paw (both of them), goes into a down, takes treats gently, and was so happy to make new friends. Going potty was his first priority the moment we were outside, and while he pulls slightly on the leash, we enjoyed our walk. Mercy didn’t mind being tethered for photos, posing for the camera with friendly eyes. Wearing a gorgeous orange coat with white socks, his weight is good for his size, and he’s been clearly well cared for (and trained) before joining us. Mercy is friendly and social with both people and other dogs, soliciting play from the greeter dog and playing hard. Mercy’s first love (but certainly not his only) is a ball. Finding a ball in the hallway, he carried it with us outside and loved batting it around the pen, but didn’t really do a retrieve when I tossed it. I love a dog who can amuse himself!! Interested in everything going on outside (and there was plenty), he’s gorgeous to watch prance around the pen, but he knows when I need him to pose for some photos. Smart boy! Our friendly, lively and fun boy is looking for a new family or person to love, and we’re rooting for him to find true love quickly. Be sure to ask for him when you visit.
07/25/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mercy came into our center after a member of the public found him as a stray, behaviors in the home are unknown. He was very energetic upon intake, loose body, tail wagging, allowed all handling but displayed a lot of energy. He pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. Mercy displayed high energy, movement, and panting upon entering SAFER assessment room. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, body soft. Mercy stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, open mouth, slight wagging tail. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, a bit distracted, became playful towards end of game. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, sniffed assessor’s hand. Mercy playfully engaged with Toy, kept a firm grip with his paw and had loose body. When off leash with greeter dog Mercy will solicit play. Due to his size, strength, and energy level, the Behavior Team feels Mercy would do best with an Experienced adopter. He may benefit from walking with a front clip harness, as well as obedience classes to learn leash manners and focus/body awareness. Mercy would benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play, as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture, open mouth, slight wagging tail. Tag: 2. Dog follows at end of the leash, a bit distracted, becomes playful towards end of game. Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back paw, sniffs hand. Toy 1: 1. Dog keeps a firm grip with his paw, body loose. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with greeter dog Mercy will solicit play.
07/24/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Mercy has engaged in and solicited play from other dogs. He arrived as a stray so in home behavior with dogs is unknown. The behavior team feels that Mercy may be placed with another playful dog, while also recommending a pre-adoption interaction to ensure compatability. 7/24: When off leash with other dogs, Mercy approaches and solicits the female greeter with play. 7/25: Mercy is playful and solciitous. He engages in a pushy style of play, and appears almost frantic the more play intensifies.
