03/25/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/25/16 18:33 Basic Info: Memphis A1068523 is a 5yr old male AMPBT mix who was given to bought from a breeder & is being surrendered due to the landlord issues. He was last seen by a veterinarian in 2015 and currently has no known health issues. Socialization: Around strangers, Memphis is protective of his owner. He will bark and will not allow anyone to approach until he is told that its ok and to relax. The owner is an ex-police officer and he stated that he trained Memphis to be protective of the family but he has never bitten anyone or any other animal. He’s lived with the owner’s 7 and 8 yo nephews and was gentle, exuberant, relaxed, playful & with them and also with the adults in the home in the home. Memphis was very attached to the owners mother because he was a gift for her from her son. Memphis has not been around other cats or dogs. He will stare at dogs that walk by. He has never bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: Memphis was walked 3 times a day. He pulls lightly on the leash. During storms/fireworks he’ll bark. He isn’t bothered by the following: having his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved, being disturbed while sleeping/resting. Memphis loves being brushed. He also likes bathtime. He hasn’t had his nails trimmed. If someone approaches the home/family member Memphis will bark. For A New Family to Know: Memphis is described as protective, affectionate, playful, confident, excitable & independent with a high activity level. The owner likes how protective and loyal he is. Memphis enjoys playing with tennis balls, kongs, and rope toys. He loves to play games of fetch & tug. Memphis is mostly an indoor only dog who sleeps on the floor or on his bed. He stays close by the owners mother’s side and follows her around. Memphis was fed Pedigree and house food. His favorite was rice, beans and baked chicken (no bones). Memphis’ known commands are sit, stay, down, stop, and relax. Intake Behavior: Memphis did not allow me to approach him. The owner stated it was because he is protective of him. I asked the owner to scan (-) and collar. He was then leashed and placed on the backdrop for photos. He was walked and transferred into a kennel. Once inside of the kennel, he began to bark when we passed and would lunge at the cage door. We were not able to approach the kennel. Treats did not work.
03/29/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Memphis had an owner he loved, two young nephews of the owner’s with whom he played gently, and loved his owner’s mom. He wasn’t socialized much beyond the home and would bark when someone approached his person, but when told, “OK. Relax” it was all good. I met Memphis today, he welcomed me to his door with a tail wag, was leashed easily and out we went. Showing off his housetraining skills the moment we were out the door, he walks nicely on leash, and it’s clear he’s looking for his person as we walk. If Memphis sees someone across the street, he’ll stop, look to see if it’s his person, and if not, looks up at me and we go on. Broke my heart. Memphis has been well taken care of and fed well (maybe a bit too well). I can sense the sadness in him even as he draped himself in my lap, gave me kisses, wagged his tail and leaned in for petting. When I tossed a ball Memphis gave it a token chase, then came back to me when I called him for another hug and a kiss. We’re told that Memphis loves being brushed, getting baths, doesn’t guard his stuff, and his favorite foods are rice, beans and baked chicken. It’s clear that Memphis grew up being loyal and protective of his person and will need to learn that strangers can bring love, good petting, and maybe his favorite snacks. It’s never too late to teach an old dog new tricks, and we’re hoping Memphis will have that chance.
03/28/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Memphis came into our center as an owner surrender citing landlord issues. It is reported Memphis was trained to be protective of his owner, will bark at strangers until released, then allowing them to approach. Owner reports Memphis lived with a 7 & 8 year old child, gentle, exuberant, relaxed, playful. He reportedly knows the commands ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘down’, ‘stop’, and ‘relax’. He is described as protective, affectionate, playful, confident, excitable, and independent. Memphis would not allow any handling during intake. After being placed in his kennel, he barked and lunged at the front and would not accept treats. Memphis pulled slightly on leash for his relief walk. He was a bit apprehensive upon entering SAFER assessment room, head and body low, but warmed up to assessor and allowed handling, leaning in. Memphis held gaze for three full seconds during Look item, open mouth pant. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, low wag. Memphis was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, settled at end. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, sniffed assessor’s hand. Memphis showed minimal interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment as owner reports he enjoys playing with tennis balls, kongs, rope toys, fetch, and tug. He approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, tail at spine level, lip lick. The Behavior Team feels Memphis would do best with an Experienced adopter. He would benefit from a slow introduction, preferably with treats, where Memphis approached his new family at his own pace and comfort level. Once comfortable, Memphis was interactive, social, friendly with both assessor and handler. Look: 1. Holds gaze, open mouth Sensitivity: 1. Leans in, low wag Tag: 2. Distracted, unresponsive Squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not pull back, sniffs hand Toy: 1. Minimal interest Dog-dog: 2. Approaches with tail at spine level, not stiff, lip lick 3/29 update: Memphis does not appear to be acclimating well to the kennel environment and continues to need a slow approach. This is in line with what would be expected based upon the profile Memphis’s previous owner left. We recommend moving Memphis into a stable home environment with an experienced foster or adopter who will allow him to settle into his new home and new family at his own pace.
03/28/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Memphis is cautious while in the yard. He briefly approaches to sniff the greeter dog then wanders away. The previous owner cites that “Memphis has not been around other cats or dogs. He will stare at dogs that walk by,” so any in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. The behavior department recommends allowing Memphis time to acclimate into a new home enrivonment before inroducing him to other dogs. 3/29 update: Memphis is loose when greeting and enters the yard where he repeatedly approaches the helper dog to sniff. He becomes anxious when another dog enters the yard barking and begins seeking exit.
