Memphis
Hello, my name is Memphis. My animal id is #15541. I am a male chocolate dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 06-Dec-2017.
Memphis is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Infection Respiratory Disease Complex and will likely require home rest and a series of antibiotics for up to 14 days. This is a contagious illness to other dogs. Memphis is suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience.

A volunteer writes: Memphis is a sweet, special boy who will also need a special adopter. This energetic puppy loves his stuffed toys so much that he carries them with him on every walk! He has shown some anxiety during his time at the Brooklyn ACC, and carrying his toys with him makes him feel better, but he will need a patient and experienced adopter to work with him on feeling more calm and comfortable. Memphis seems to like other dogs, loves chasing toys, and has a penchant for tasty treats! Come and meet this sweetheart at the Brooklyn ACC today.

Vomited on walk the other day. Cageside exam- BAR, no food left in cage, not vomit, eating treats. No additional vomiting noted.
CIRDC noted on rounds S/O: QAR. Attention seeking. Eating well but regurgitated EENT: Eyes clear, mild mucoid nasal discharge HL: Coughing, normal RR?RE INTEG: WNL MS: Ambulatory x 4 UG: Male A: CIRDC P: Rec doxycycline 300mg PO q24 x 14 days. Excellent prognosis

Look:: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, and tail is in neutral position with a relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag:: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins.
Paw squeeze 1:: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Eyes are averted and ears are relaxed or back.

Toy:: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His/her body is between you and the toy, and is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
Summary:: During the handling assessment Memphis is relaxed and social. He engages in play, and does not respond to the leash.
Summary (1):: Memphis was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. 12/7: When off leash at the Care Center, Memphis quickly enters the pens, moving past the novel female dog. He anxiously paces the pens, then offers the female greeter’s a correction when she runs towards him. He spends the rest of his session, biting and dragging his leash. 12/8: Memphis spends most of his session pacing the pens while biting his leash. He exchanges face to face greets for a short interaction.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Memphis so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. Memphis is a young, enthusiastic, social dog; who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised.

Potential challenges: : Anxiety,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Memphis has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) during play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Memphis, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. Leash Biting: At the care center Memphis has displayed a high anxiety (biting, and dragging his leash.) As Memphis plays well with other dogs, this reaction is likely due to excitement and frustration, we recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Memphis will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs.
