I am a neutered male black and white rat terrier mix. The shelter thinks I am about 4 YEARS old.
I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 01/21/2016 from NY 10001, owner surrender reason stated was STRAY.

01/21/16 13:13 Basic information Melons was brought in as a stray by police. Behavior during Intake Melons was afraid during intake. He constantly cried while inside of the officer’s carrier, and once removed he backed into a corner and growled when interacted with. After being given a moment, Melons approached counselor and others in the room. Melons accepted treats, and allowed counselor to pick him up for photos. Melons allowed all handling to be conducted.

01/26/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Melons walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. He was calm and relaxed during handling. Melons followed the assessor at the end of the leash during the tag test with a calm and relaxed body language. He took the toy away with a soft body language. Melons did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, neutral wagging tail, open mouth. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy.

When off leash with other dogs, Melons is forwardwhen greeting and briefly runs around when solicited by a playful dog. 1/27 update: Melons continues to offer forward greeting and begins to bark at stimuli in the yard.
