Behavior toward dogs: relaxed and playful Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: Unknown Bite history: None reported House trained: Partially, but he does have accidents Energy level/descriptors: Other notes: Upon intake Mellow was shy and would hide, he did allow all handling. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/7/17 Look: 2. Dog avoids the assessor, distracted and unable to position. Sensitivity:2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is between his legs, body tense with his mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1:3. Dog closes mouth, becomes tense. Flank Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy 1: No interest. Summary: Mellow was very distracted and fixated sniffing the floor in the assessment room, he avoided the assessor. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Mellow displays neutral body language with male and female dogs. He may attempt to mount, but responds well to handler interruptions. According to Mellow’s previous guardian, Mellow lived with one other dog who was the same breed, around that dog he was relaxed and played exuberantly. The Behavior Department recommends that Mellow be placed with a dog that matches her calm sociability. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/4/17: During his medical examinationation, Mellow was very nervous, tail tucked with wide eyes, he allowed minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owners describe Mellow as a high-energy dog. In the care center he has been active. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13)- Mellow appears to easily startle and become uncomfortable with up close handling, for these reasons we advise against a home with children at this time. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling- Mellow is reported to have accidents in the house. He will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), a consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_Fearful- Mellow has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers, at times avoiding interaction and shying away from direct touch. Mellow startles easily and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement. He displays proper warning signals as well as increasing distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.
