01/26/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/26/16 09:22 Behavior during intake: This dog gave a low growl when I approched the crate with a treat. The ACO got the dog out. As I was taking the dog’s picture its growl got louder. I did not bring the dog into the office with the back drop based on the dog’s behavior. He did not respond to treats.
01/29/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Sometimes it’s the rough diamond that shines brightest, all the more precious for being imperfect. And so it is with beautiful Mello, a shy, scared boy who stole my heart from the moment we met. There’s no denying he has his issues, and it’s clear that socializing him with the outside world was not high on his former owner’s list of priorities, but while Mello’s wary at first, I’ve come to see his frequent rumblings as just another part of his offbeat charm. Underneath it all he clearly craves attention and the fun of toys, treats and a walk (or in his case, frolic) through the park just like any other dog. He’s touch-shy but very responsive to my voice, and once Mello knows me as a friend, he greets me with little whines and a snuffly nose on my hand, and I’m even allowed to gently pet his head. Toys and treats are accepted with polite good manners and no guarding, he greets other large dogs with quiet appreciation and seems to be house trained to boot. It’s going to take time, patience and TLC to draw Mello out of his world and into ours, but to see him leap through the snow like a deer or dash after a tennis ball as though he were a puppy is to see hope for his future. If you’re an experienced adopter and have what it takes to give Mello the loving home he deserves then please, don’t make him wait any longer. Discover this hidden treasure at our Manhattan Care Center today.
01/28/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mello walks calmly on leash. Once the assessor tries to pet Mello before the assessment he stands tall and makes direct eye contact. He was growling and exposes his front teeth. The behavior team decided to place him back in his kennel. Due to the behavior demonstrated in the shelter the behavior department believes that Diesel is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER. According to staff member during the intake Mello gave a low growl when the staff member approached the crate with a treat. An ACO got the dog out. As the other staff member was taking the dog’s picture Mello started to growls louder”. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home.
01/28/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs Mello has lots of bursts of running play. He offers a play bow and runs toward the helper dog in that position, vocalizing when he gets close. He ceases play when the female helper dog does not engage, he has not yet been introduced to a male. Mello entered the care center as a stray so his in-home behaviors with other dogs are unknown. Based on these observations the behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before going to a home with other dogs.
