01/22/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
01/22/16 15:07 BASIC INFO Mazembe is an 11 month old American Staffordshire Terrier / Labrador Retriever mix. His family bought him from his parents’ owner and surrendered him because he’s not accepted by their home-owner’s insurance. SOCIALIZATION Mazembe is friendly, outgoing, and affectionate with new people. There were lots of children visiting his home regularly and he was relaxed, playful, and tolerant with them. He plays gently with adults and children. He lived with 2 small male dogs and 2 cats and was relaxed, playful, affectionate, and tolerant with them, as well as dogs he meets on walks. He’s never bit anyone. BEHAVIOR Mazembe doesn’t mind storms. He enjoys being brushed. He’s friendly with new people who approach his home/family. He doesn’t mind when someone takes his food/treat/toy, moves him off furniture, holds/restrains him, or wakes him up. He’s nervous but tolerant during baths. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Mazembe’s family describes him as friendly, playful, medium-high energy, and super duper affectionate with everyone. He follows his family around. He likes balls, chew toys, and bones and plays fetch, tug, and chase. He lived mostly outside but spent time inside as well. He slept with his owner or on the porch. He ate dry Purina food and enjoyed peanut butter, chicken, and meatloaf as treats. He’s housetrained, doesn’t have accidents, and potties in grass. Inside, he chews cords when left alone. He’s learning to not chew them so much and can be left alone if cords are concealed under things or taped up. He’s otherwise well-behaved while left alone. Outside, he was kept within a 5′ high chain-link fence. He sometimes tried to dig under it. His owner would tell him to stop from the window, and he would. He’s never dug out and escaped. He was crate-trained when he was a puppy but doesn’t need to be crated anymore. Mazembe knows sit, come, and down. He went for brisk walks and didn’t pull on his leash. INTAKE Mazembe had a loose, wiggly body and fast wagging tail while we pet him, scanned him (+), collared him, and positioned him for pictures. Upon meeting us, he immediately cuddled into our laps, leaned into us, and licked our faces. He sat when asked and took treats nicely. He walked nicely on his leash.
01/31/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Mazembe is a very likable young man. He is gorgeous too, pure ebony with lovely and luminous chesnut almond shaped eyes. Mazie is a little shy in his kennel but accepts my leash. He seems at times a little wary of the care center. He walks quite well( he seems wary to cross large avenues), does his business without marking and sits beautifully on command. He takes treats delicately from my hand. As his former master said, he is incredibly affectionate, a major kisser and hugger…His tail wags non stop and he never misses an opportunity to salute a staff or another volunteer. Mazie is with us as his landlord became unfriendly to Pities. He was good to his family and lived happily with many children, two small male dogs and two cats..He loved to play and was across the board, a well behaved pooch..Mazie mostly was a yard dog, roaming the space at the end of a long chain. I can see why he barks in the street strongly at other dogs, big and small as he might have served the purpose of a guard dog. He is known to be friendly to strangers, though and has shown only a very sociable and loving behavior to people at the care center. A change in lifestyle might just do the trick, Central Park as a yard and a 100% indoor life with no need to worry about unwelcome peers. He seems to enjoy his time in play groups with other pooches very much, almost dancing and bouncing to try to get their attention and play with him. Gorgeous Mazembe is at the Manhattan Care Center, hoping that you will give him the chance to be your very loyal and loving forever best friend.
01/26/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mazembe was excited but very interested in interacting with handler during assessment – jumped up, mouthy (moderate). He was overexcited during handling, jumping up, and was hard to position, but showed no aggression. Mazembe did a lot of jumping up, body checking and played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction. He was easy to handle when chewing on toys Mazembe was surrendered by his owner. According to his previous owner Mazembe is friendly, outgoing, and affectionate with new people. There were lots of children visiting his home regularly and he was relaxed, playful, and tolerant with them. He plays gently with adults and children. He lived with 2 small male dogs and 2 cats and was relaxed, playful, affectionate, and tolerant with them, as well as dogs he meets on walks. He doesn’t mind when someone takes his food/treat/toy”. Mazembe appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. He is quick to use his mouth in play and has poor body awareness, resulting in him mouthing handlers with moderate pressure. The behavior department feels that he can go to an experienced no child home. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you.
01/26/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Mazembe is social and playful, engaging in running play solicited by bounces and spins near the other dogs. He is tolerant of dogs that lack appropriate social skills and respectful of others who are not interested in play. His owner reports that Mazembe lived with two small male dogs and was “relaxed, playful, affectionate, and tolerant with them, as well as dogs he meets on walks.” Based on this information the behavior department feels that Mazembe could go to a home with another dog that is equally as boistrous and playful. When off leash with other dogs, Mazembe greets politely and becomes bouncy (but still polite) when attempting to solicit play. 1/27 update: Mazembe continues to solicit play from other dogs and engages in running bouncy play. 1/28 update: Mazembe solicits and engages in running play with males and females. He spins and bounces around the other dogs during play. 1/30 update: Mazembe engages in bouncy play, tolerant of a female that lacks appropriate social skills. 2/2 update: Mazembe engages in soft running play with males and females; often using his paws to solicit when play ceases.
