12/03/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
12/03/16 15:10 Mayo has a skin condition that he’s been dealing with for two years. He’s friendly and outgoing to strangers and has spent time around kids of all ages. He’s relaxed around children and plays gently with them, however, when he’s around adults he’ll play more exuberantly. Mayo lived with two small dogs that he played gently with. He’s never spent time around cats so it’s unknown how he’d react to them. Mayo has never bitten another animal or human. Mayo isn’t bothered by loud noises such as fireworks or storms and tends to go about his normal business. He isn’t bothered when his owner takes away food bowls while he’s eating but growls when his bones get taken away. When his owner takes away toys, Mayo believes they’re playing and will try to get the toy back. He isn’t bothered when his owner pushes him off furniture, tries to restrain or hold him, or wakes him up from his slumber. He doesn’t mind getting baths and loves being brushed. His owner never clipped his nails so it’s unknown how he’d react to it. Mayo also isn’t bothered when people he doesn’t know approaches his home or owner. Mayo’s owner describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and mellow. His activity level is medium but when he’s ready to play he enjoys balls, stuffed toys, and rope (especially when playing tug-of-war). He also likes playing chase and wrestling. His owner’s favorite thing about him is how he believes he’s a lapdog. Mayo spends most of his time indoors and when his owner is home, tends to follow him around or be in the same room. When it’s time to sleep, Mayo lays on his own doggy bed. He’s very house-trained and never has accidents indoors. When outside, he likes going potty anywhere he can pick up a scent. When Mayo is left home alone, he’s very well-behaved and tends to just lay around the whole time. He’s never been crate-trained and knows sit, come, down, excuse me, and no. Mayo enjoys brisk walks on leash and remains on leash in dog parks. He doesn’t pull on walks and has never been walked off-leash. He eats dry food and his owner feeds him Pedigree (turkey flavor) a cup and a quarter, twice a day. He loves carrots. On intake, Mayo’s tail was hanging slightly between his legs. He was panting heavily when his owner left. When the counselor offered Mayo a treat, he ate it. He sat still for pictures and collaring and after a second treat started to wag his tail.

12/06/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Altered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults, two small dogs Behavior toward children: Relaxed and gently playful Behavior toward dogs: Will engage in gentle play Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: Growls if bones are taken away from him Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and mellow Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/6/16 Summary: Mayo came into the assessment room tense and appeared uncomfortable. When the assessor attempted to touch him, he became whale eyed, body stiff and growled. Due to his current medical condition/health status, Mayo is not an appropriate candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. The behavior department believes Mayo would benefit best from placement with a New Hope Rescue who can meet his needs medically and then assess behavior once in a stable environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Mayo to new and unfamiliar situations. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the care center, Mayo slowly enters the pen and greets the novel female dog with whale eyes at the gate. He slowly greets her and wanders the pens, quickly spinning when the female dog comes close. He is tolerant of face to face greetings and gives a little bounce. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/3/16 During his initial medical exam Mayo appeared tense but tolerated all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Due to the fear/avoidance behavior displayed in the care center, we cannot fully evaluate Mayo and feel that he will be best set up to succeed through placement with a New Hope partner. We recommend only positive reinforcement-based, force-free training for Mayo as aversive methods are likely to heighten his fear and increase aggression.)
