04/13/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/13/17 14:25 Basic Information: Maya is an 8 year old spayed female Pitbull mix that has an Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. Owner has had Maya for 2 weeks but had to surrender due to pet conflict. Socialization: According to the owner, around strangers Maya is friendly and playful. She has been around an 8 year old child and was always relaxed and respectful around the child. Owner had 5 other dogs in the home a spayed & neutered Shih Tzu, a spayed Pitbull, a neutered King Charles Cavalier, and a neutered Rhodesian Ridgeback/Boxer mix. Owner stated that Maya was relaxed and respectful of all dogs except her Boxer mix. Maya has recently bit another dog breaking skin. Behavior: Maya is not bothered by having her food, treats or toys taken away, being pushed off furniture, being held/restrained, being disturbed while sleeping or having her feet touched. Owner has never tried to give her a bath or brush her coat so behavior is unknown. When unfamiliar people would approach the home or yard of the owner, Maya would bark. For a New Family to Know: Maya is described as friendly, affectionate, playful and excitable. She has a low activity level and likes to play with stuffed animals. In the home, Maya liked to follow the owners around from room to room at first and then go stay in her favorite spot. She was fed both wet & dry food brands Blue Buffalo and Royal Canin. Maya is house trained and would only have accidents in the home where she would defecate due to her medical condition. When she was left alone in the home or yard, she was always well behaved. Owner did not try to crate train her so behavior is unknown. Maya knows the cues sit and come. For exercise, she was taken on brisk walks on the leash, taken to off leash dog parks or let out in the yard to play. Owner stated that Maya did well at the dog park and did not have any incidents. When on leash, she does not pull at all. Owner has never tried to walk her off leash on the street so behavior is unknown.
03/28/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Miss Maya joined us when her owner became too ill to care for her, and we’ve all fallen in love. Considered a “senior” at 8 years young, Maya is handling her new situation as well as can be expected. Doing a little dance for me when I stopped in front of her kennel, she’s easily leashed for her walk. While she’s too thin, we’re feeding her an extra meal daily, she still takes treats like the lady she is after showing me her ‘sit’. Maya seems to be housetrained, going potty as soon as we were out the door, has nice leash manners and poses for her photo shoot like a pro. Her personality is all sweetness and calm, and spending time with her is like finding an oasis in the midst of a storm. Her big doe eyes make soft contact, and while her tail is tucked from time to time, she kisses, loves to be petted with her head in my lap, closing her eyes, savoring the pleasure of it all. Maya is looking for her retirement home in which love, walks, nutritious food and more love are on the daily ‘to do’ list. There’s nothing like the quiet and solid love of a senior, and Maya is waiting to give her heart to you. Won’t you make her yours today? Another volunteer writes: If you’re looking for a best friend to joyfully accompany you on long walks and quietly and peacefully be around the rest of the time, please come to the Manhattan Care Center to meet Maya. Sophisticated, graceful, elegant, and beautiful are the best words to describe the eight-year-old. We easily and quickly prepared for our walk, which proved to be drama-free and therapeutic. Maya walked well on her leash, was so affectionate and loving, and was very observant of everyone and everything we encountered. Once she’s in her forever home, I’m sure it won’t be long before she gains the weight she needs. (She’s got a healthy appetite–she loved the treats I gave her!) Imagine how much happier and even more beautiful she’ll be. Having Maya as a bff would be awesome!

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/12/2017 During her initial medical exam, Maya was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Her owners describe Maya as having a low activity level which matches what we have seen in the care center.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): It is reported Maya growled toward other resident dog when they were fed together. Maya gave appropriate warning of her discomfort but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savyy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Maya can be left alone while eating so she does ot need to escalate from a growl. Behavior modification for food guarding behavior can be found as aspcapro.org Potential challenges: _X_House soiling: Maya is noted to have occasional accidents in the house due to medical issues. We recommend placing wee wee pads inside the home for in between her regular and frequent walks. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_Resource guarding
