03/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Maya seems like such a wonderful, well-rounded gal! She is middle-aged and her energy level seems ideal. If she’s sprawled out on her bed when I approach her cage, she lets out a little “woof” before wiggling her way to the front. She has the sweetest amber eyes and the best smile. She is easy on leash, seems housebroken, eagerly “sits” for treats and takes them gently. Her tail steadily wags throughout our walk and cuddle break. In her previous home she loved to play with stuffed toys, and when I toss her a squeaky ball she holds it in her mouth like an egg and gently squeezes it as she prances around, creating her own squeaky soundtrack! She’ll easily let me take it from her to play fetch, and her previous owner reports no guarding issues. They also tell us she played gently with a 7 year old child, is nervous during thunderstorms, and is well-behaved when left alone. Maya previously lived harmoniously with another dog and she has been a star during playgroups since her arrival at the care center. She could be the star of your home, come meet her at Brooklyn ACC!

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Maya previously lived with 1 adult and has been around a 7 year old boy. The owner stated Maya was relaxed and played gentle with him, she has also lived with another dog her size and was described relaxed and gentle towards them. The owner describes Maya as friendly, affectionate, and shy. The owner mentioned Maya is house trained, has a medium activity level and well behaved when home alone. At intake it was reported Maya was calm and allowed all handling. During SAFER Maya came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, she was friendly and affectionate towards the assessor. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Maya joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Maya was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Maya appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, so the department feels she can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Maya greets several dogs with a confident, soft posture. She solicits play with subtle bounces, is tolerant of pushy males and will correct for behavior that makes her uncomfortable such as high energy, rowdy play.
