04/06/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Maxus lives by the saying that age is a case of mind over matter–if he doesn’t mind, it doesn’t matter! The years may have frosted his face but they haven’t dimmed his puppyish enthusiasm for food, fun and adventure, and no one loves to explore more than this dapper gent. Like many older dogs, he prefers to take his time on walks, first finishing up his ‘business,’ then leisurely sniffing and tasting his way around the block before reluctantly returning to his spotless den with a look of sad acceptance. With an appetite to match his youthful spirit, he’ll happily sit on command to receive a treat…or five…or ten…and if you’re looking for some motivation to teach an old dog new tricks, just keep those tasty rewards coming! Maxus greets friends of all shapes and sizes with soft tail wags and a gentle hello snuffle, and it’s no surprise to learn he scored high in his behavior assessment too. A family pet used to plenty of company, his great, low-key social skills guarantee a warm welcome wherever he goes, and having lived with another dog and interacted gently with children, he’d fit into almost any home like a well-worn glove. We can’t wait to see our golden boy live out his retirement surrounded by all the love and loyalty he deserves, and hope it won’t be long before he meets his perfect match. Welcome this sweet senior home today and get ready to start living life to the Maxus!
04/03/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Maxus came into our center as an owner surrender citing moving issues. Owner reports Maxus lived with another dog of similar size. It is reported Maxus is friendly with strangers and children he meets, though he has never lived with children. Owner states Maxus is not bothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. It is reported Maxus is housetrained to go outside on the grass. He is described as friendly and affectionate. During intake, Maxus was friendly and allowed all handling. He was focused on sniffing the entire room upon entering the SAFER assessment area, as well as during the actual assessment. Maxus allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, eyes averted. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, whining, soft. Maxus was distracted and unresponsive during Tag game, sniffing entire room. He pulled his paw back and whined on both Squeeze attempts. Maxus showed no interest in Toy. When off leash with other dogs Maxus sniffs around the pen occasionally approaching the helper dog to sniff. The Behavior Team feels Maxus would do well with an Average adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is focused on all other stimuli available, leans in, whines, soft Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back and whines Toy 1: No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs Maxus sniffs around the pen occasionally approaching the helper dog to sniff.
04/02/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Maxus has mostly displayed sexually motivated behaviors when interacting with other dogs, approaching, sniffing then even trying to mount. Previous owner states: “Maxus has lived with his another pit bull, Maxus was okay with the other dog but the other dog would try to fight with Maxus and Maxus would do nothing.” The behavior department recommends that Maxus be allowed to decompress in a new home environment, as well as a pre-adoption interaction before placing him into a home with dogs. When off leash with other dogs Maxus sniffs around the pen occasionally approaching the helper dog to sniff. After some time he attempts to mount persistently after correction is offered. 4/6 update: Maxus displays some sexually moticated behaviors, but does not follow through with mounting.
