A volunteer writes:

“All You Need is Love” is the “Open Sesame” to  a better world.  Maxine was so wary and sad when she arrived at the care center, like an elderly left to his or her lonesome. “Her ears were folded down and she was whimpering…” Her finder said, though that she was very playful with her children and quite energetic..Maxine, a big girl lays quietly in her kennel. She looks stoic  and stern. She hesitates to leave her den but does eventually. The staff leads her to a pen to participate in a playgroup with other dogs. Maxine just stands there, accepting the greeting from another female..It is clear that she wants to be a million miles away from here. I try her for a second outing. This time, she comes out easily from her kennel. She walks nicely on the leash, does her business in one stop and meets uneventfully her peers.  She gets suddenly worried when I tethered her  for pictures in the sun..I can tell what she thinks..”Do not abandon me here, please…” We will take photos inside..Do not worry.. Maxine feels safe in a pen. She takes some treats from my hand, quite politely . We talk briefly and Maxine  jumps on the bench next to me. Quite agile for a  tubby gal like her ! It did not take long…Maxine and I bonded very quickly. She spread her body half on the bench and half on my lap, totally abandoned …  Love, Love and again Love. She was so relaxed and all kisses. She thought she was home….I knew she was not and it made me so weak…Maxine is a big girl dressed in a very light and well groomed brindle coat. Her weight is generous. She has known a few litters but looks pretty healthy.  I know that behind the sad and scared mouse is a  lively dame with most likely a strong will. I see also a loyal and loving friend who will always be there for the one  who will open her heart and home to her. All You Need is Love, indeed , to change Maxine’s world…Maxine is at the Manhattan Care Center, dreaming of you..
Another volunteer writes:

The finder stated that Maxine is described as a playful and energetic dog. She has interacted with children but becomes overly excited and sometimes knocks them over while playing. During intake, Maxine remained seated with her ears folded down while whimpering. She appeared attached to her finder and would follow the finder wherever the finder would move.  When she was approached she would lower her head and stare at the person from the corner of her eyes. When the Admissions Counselor offered her treats she would move away. When Maxine was approached from the side of her body and scanned for a microchip, she looked away while low growling. After the Admissions Counselor took hold of her leash, she became more accepting and would sit near the counselor. When she was called and petted on her head, she would lower her head slowly while wagging her tail. She responded well to the command “sit.’ She was collared, scanned for a microchip (negative) and photographed.
