A volunteer writes:
During the first few days of her stay sometimes I would see a staff member walking back from the yard with Maxine slung over their shoulders – “she’s really good, she just doesn’t want to go back inside.” A pleasantly plump, dark brindled beauty with pleading eyes. She is an older gal (the best kind!) with all the benefits that often come with age – quiet, well-behaved, excellent leash manners, housebroken, and tricks already up her sleeve (including “sit,” “heel,” and “shake”). Maxine’s previous owners report that she doesn’t always get along with other dogs, but she offers a low tail wag when we’ve seen others on walks and she has been tolerant in playgroup. That she is out of her element is palpable, but after a little bit of warm-up time Maxine readily seeks comfort from people. She’ll softly wag her tail when I call her over, sit next to me on the bench, prop her paws up on the fence to greet a passing staff member, lean into me when I pet her, and even give kisses! Though she no longer needs to be carried, she still peacefully protests going back inside. She is very intelligent and seems to have the care center programmed as “not home” in her GPS. Even blocks away she knows when we turn a corner to head back and puts on the brakes, hoping that we can just keep walking in the other direction. Once inside the gates, she seems to accept the reality that today isn’t the day she bids farewell to her cage and is easily walked inside. She wags her tail and approaches the familiar faces we pass in the hallway… and we assure her that soon someone will notice what a sweet, wonderful lady she is and give her a place to program as “home”!

A Staff member writes:
Maxine is a shy older lady who was adopted from AC&C eight years ago, but was brought back last week due to landlord issues. I was smitten the first time I saw her! Maxine is short, a bit chubby, and sweetly approached me with a low wag when I called her over. Maxine takes a few minutes to warm up to new people, and will likely do best in a home where her family will give her the time she needs to become comfortable in her new environment. Please help Maxine find her forever home, and pull this gentle girl from BACC today!

A Staff member updates: Maxine is a sweet pup that was surrendered to us because of landlord issues. She can no longer stay in her home and is now looking for a new forever home!! She did very well on her SAFER and loves human attention. It was noted by her previous owner that she has not always gotten along with other dogs and children. Her behavior around other dogs in the care center is tolerant. She has not been interested in playing with other dogs, but enjoys playing with humans. Pull this sweet girl today and help her find a home!

S/O: Per ACO, Maxine has lost about 5 lbs. since intake and yesterday appeared inappetent. This AM, patient appeared QAR, both food bowls that were in the kennel were empty.
Recommend to continue to monitor appetite and recheck weight (make sure weight is checked on the same scale).

S/O:  Patient reported to have bloody soft stool again today.  Based on fecal ran yesterday, negative for parasites/protozoa.  Patient is BAR, continues to seek attention, eating/drinking well.  No c/s/v/d.

P:  Start course of Metronidazole – 375 mg PO BID x 7 days., recheck at end of course

Re-exam: 4/11

S/O: Vet check for monitoring size of growth + 2 lbs weight loss.  On presentation, patient is BARH, very energetic.  Attention seeking, very affectionate for exam.mm = pink, moist, hydration = adequate, Integ = Clean coat; Dermal round growth measures 2.5 cm, non-painful, and soft, mobile. EENT= clear OU, clean AU, nnd, Mild calculus. H/L = nma, nsr; clear lung fields bilaterally. Abdomen = snp, no obvious masses/organomegaly, MS = no obvious lamenesses; BCS = 5/9, LN = wnl, CNS = appropriate

P:

1. Check with New Hope on status of patient
2. Recommend continue to monitor weight – poss. recent weight loss a combination of diet +/- recent onset of diarrhea +/- more exercise.  Conflicting opinions as to whether or not patient is eating every meal.
3. FNA of mass revealed fatty cells – lipoma highly likely
4. Placed sign for feeding wet and dry food in separate food bowls, for each feeding.
5. Monitor appetite

S/O:  On AM rounds, noted patient to have a mild amount of dried mucopurulent ocular discharge, OS.  No blepharospasm noted otherwise, patient non-painful.

RELATIONSHIP – Maxine has been with the family for eight years
PEOPLE – Maxine lived with four adults
OTHER ANIMALS – Maxine lived with two cats but was kept completely separated
PERSONALITY/HABITS- Maxine is a quiet dog that prefers the company of adults. Maxine can be hostile towards other dogs, and not always tolerant of children, her behavior around cats in unknown. She is used to leash walks around the block for exercise but does not visit the dog run. At home she likes to follow her owner around the house. Loud noises can startle her. She prefers wet food.
TRAINING – Maxine knows the commands – sit, heel, stay and shake. Maxine is house broken
MEDICAL – Maxine is nine years old. Upon intake Maxine presented with a mass on one of his forelimbs.
BEHAVIOR DURING INTAKE – Upon intake Maxine was nervous with a tense body and ears back. She allowed all handling including scan for microchip (positive) and collared. Maxine was tense for handling around neck area and was very wide eyed when collaring. Maxine walked well on leash following direction.

Behavior: Experienced Home
During intake it was noted that Maxine appeared to be nervous. She allowed all handling but became tense, and wide eyed when collared by an Admissions Counselor. During SAFER Maxine was not very attention seeking, but was sociable when greeting the assessor and allowed the assessor to conduct each handling item without issue. She was relaxed during the tag interaction, and was not interested in the in the food or rawhide items and was easy to handle when chewing on the toys. Maxine did well on the SAFER, appears highly human-social, but some concerns around other dogs and sometimes around children were noted by the previous owner. We have seen some timidity (but no aggression) around other dogs when interacting off-leash, so we recommend an experienced adopter who can safely manage and positively modify any of these behaviors should they appear in a future home environment, as well as allow Maxine to warm up to her new home and new family at her own pace.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is a bit stiff; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.
Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back.
Food: Inconclusive, dog is not eating.
Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
Rawhide: 1. No interest.
Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Maxine is very nervous. She is tolerant when greeted but not interested in interaction beyond initial meeting.

3/28, 3/29 Update
Maxine continues to be tolerant, respectful and friendly with a wagging tail when greeting other dogs but is not interested in interacting after the first meeting.
3/31,4/1 Update
Maxine continues to not be interested in interacting with other dogs but is tolerant and respectful around them.
4/5 Update
She continues to be tolerant around other dogs but is not interested in engaging with them.

4/9 Update

Maxine is respectful and tolerant when off leash with other dogs but is not interested in interacting.

4/13 Update

Maxine continues to be respectful and tolerant around other dogs, and generally is not interested in engaging or interacting with them beyond brief smelling.

4/18 update:

Maxine is tolerant and respectful.  She will solicit with both males and females.

4/21 Update

Maxine continues to be tolerant with other dogs and is not interested in play but will explore the yard in the presence of another dog

4/25 update:

Maxine continues to exhibit these behaviors while socialzing with other dogs.
