Max A1116419 has displayed conflicting behavior with other dogs in the care centers in addition to some frustration on leash, becoming increasingly difficult to manage. While he remains social with his handlers away from the care centers, he is not thriving and remains stressed in shelter, continuing to rehearse undesired behaviors on leash when passing other dogs.

06/24/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
06/24/17 15:54 Basic: Max is a 2 yr old neutered large dog. His owner got him from a friend and has had him for one month. He has not had any injuries or health issues and has not been to the vet. Socialization: Around strangers Max is very friendly and playful. He has spent time with children, in the home, ages 2 and 6. With them he is relaxed and playful, but also sometimes will guard his toys and growl/show teeth. He plays somewhat rough and exuberantly with both adults and children. He has spent time with other dogs, small and large, and with them can either be relaxed and playful, or aggressive and too rough when he plays. He will cark, chase and engage in play with other dogs but sometimes the play will turn into fighting. He has not spent time with other pets. Max has bitten a person 2 weeks ago, where it did not break skin. Max has never bitten another animal. Behavior: Max sometimes poops and pees inside the home. He isnt bothered by loud noises or when someone (adults): touches his food or takes a toy or treat away, pushes him off furniture, holds him or restrains him while excited, disturbs him while sleeping, someone unfamiliar approaches his family member. He sometimes barks when someone is at the door. He is frightened of baths. For New Family: Max is described as friendly, affectionate, excitable and playful. His activity level is high and his owner likes how friendly he is with adults. Max loves to run around and play with balls, chew bones and indestructible toys. He plays fetch and chase. He has been kept mostly indoors and has been on a BARF diet. He sleeps in his owner’s bed and follows them around the house. When he is home alone he is well behaved, but the kitchen and other areas of the house are sectioned off so he cannot go in them. He has accidents inside 2 or 3 times a month and is walked 3 times a day. He likes to go on the grass when he is walked outside. He knows “sit, come, go” commands. He loves to go to off leash dog parks, and keeps his distance and is hard to catch. He pulls hard on the leash. During intake Max was friendly with the counselors and had a loose wiggly body. He was jumping on the counselor and was giving kisses. He became very agitated when other dogs were present and has a history, based on owner notes, that he is not very good with other dogs and is too rough with them. He allowed all collaring and handling from the counselor and other people who came into the room.
07/01/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Max is one stunning boy in his gorgeous coat, perfect weight, and breathtaking eyes looking like they were made up by a world renowned make up artist. Eager for a walk and a new friend, Max pottied the moment we were out the door, and walked nicely on leash to the park. He notices other dogs as they pass but doesn’t pull towards them, and seems to be looking for something or someone as we walk. We’re told by Max’s former person that he’s friendly and playful with all including young children, but will growl and show teeth if they come near his things. He seems to be OK when adults come near. Max has been playful with other dogs both big and small, but play can sometimes escalate if it becomes too rough. Max is frightened by baths, and when we were in the park and I invited him to drink from the water fountain, he shied away. He sounds like a dog who will not want to go for a walk in the rain!! He’s well behaved when home alone and sleeps in his owner’s bed. Mr. Max has a megawatt smile which he uses often, his eyes sparkle, he loves treats for which he sits without prompting and didn’t mind being tethered for photos. He’s a gorgeous, friendly boy who’ll do best in a home without young children since he doesn’t like to share his toys. Mr. Max told me he’s accepting applications for his new home, and is ready to move on. Let’s make it happen today!

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 6/25: Max is muzzled for off leash introduction due to owner citing history of conflict with other dogs. When introduced off leash, Max displays a bit of a tense body when approached, but quickly loses interest and is distracted by other stimuli, and the presence of the muzzle. INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Max was friendly and had a loose body. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 6/24/17 During his initial medical exam, Max was active, whining, and social. ENERGY LEVEL: Max’s previous owner described him as having a high level of activity. He is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to biting a child (with no broken skin) when in possession of a toy, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Max is reported to guard his toys from children, growling at them when they come near him when he is in possession of them and escalating to biting. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Max’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Max has been observed to react to other dogs and on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Max may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
