04/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile 3/31/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Previously lived with: Adults, five small children, and a cat. Behavior toward dogs: Got along with the neighbor’s Chihuahua. Housetrained: No SAFER ASSESSMENT: Summary: Max remains difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging, baring teeth, growling, and snapping. He showed some noise sensitivity, startling when he hears loud noises coming from other areas of the room. Out of concern for his stress levels, we feel Max is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 3/31/17 During his initial medical exam, Max was tense and growling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Max so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center he has allowed only minimal handling. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Max. IN-SHELTER OBSERSATIONS: Max growls, hard barks and charges toward the front of the kennel when approached. He is receptive to treating and consumes small treats tossed to the floor of his kennel. He takes treats gently from the handler when offered through the kennel bars. When attempting to leash, Max retreats a bit and low growls. He allows the leash to gently be placed over his head. Max pulls hard on leash, and continues to pull toward the back of the yard. He is not sociable toward the handler and appears preoccupied with attempting to exit. He does not show interest in food treats outdoors. Max allows handler to place a safety clip in his leash. He slightly hesitates when replacing into his kennel, though eventually walks in when guided on leash.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a new Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification guidance in a stable home environment. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Max to acclimate comfortably to his new environment. Force-free, reward based training only ins advised when introducting Max to new and unfamiliar situations. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Max has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, he displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Max has shown some escalated warning behaviors in the care center. It is important to make sure Max stays under threshold and is not pushed to escalate further to a bite. _X_Strength/leash pulling: Max is a large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. It is recommended Max be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which helps diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. _X_Kennel presence: While we cannot be certain is this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Max mayshow behavior similar to what he is currently demonstrating in his kennel.
