01/17/17 11:25 Basic Information Max is a 6 year old neutered Shih Tzu. Owner is surrendering him because she no longer has a place to live. Owner bought Max from a breeder 6 years ago. Owner stated he has no medical issues but has never taken him to a vet. Socialization Max is friendly around strangers. He has not lived or spent time with kids, other dogs, or cats. He does not play with adults. He has never bitten a person or animal. Behavior Owner stated Max does not like to put on clothes or go outside. He will try to bite if you try to put on clothes and you have to drag him to go outside. During thunder storms he will hide. He is not bothered if his food is touched while he is eating or if you try to take away a toy. He will growl and bite if you try to take away a treat from him. He does not like to be picked up and will bite. During bath time and being brushed he barks, snaps, and bites. He barks if someone knocks on the door but is not bothered if someone unfamiliar approaches his owner. Owner has never trimmed his nails. For a New Family to Know Max is described as affectionate, independent, and pushy with a medium activity level. Owner likes how he gets really excited and greets her when she comes into the house. He will follow her owner around when home. He likes to play with balls and squeaky toys. He plays fetch. He was kept indoors only and slept in a crate. He was fed chicken flavored canned food mixed with dry. Owner also fed him chicken stew and beef stew mixed with dry food. He was fed twice a day. He is house-trained and will go potty anywhere outside. He is well behaved when left home alone but. He has never been left alone in a yard. He will do well for 5 hours or so in a crate. He does not know any commands. For exercise owner takes him on short walks or he plays with his ball inside the home. He does not pull on a leash. Owner stated you have to drag him when you walk him. He is never walked off the leash.

SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/14/17 Toy: No Interest Summary: When the assessor attempted to remove Max from his kennel, he began to growl and bare his teeth. Max tolerates a very minimal amount of handling. He will growl and turn away from touch. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Due to the nature of Max’s intake, no information was provided on his behavior towards other dogs. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Max mostly keeps to himself as he wanders in a group of small male and female dogs. He mostly remains seated in one spot, tolerating the other dog’s face to face greetings. He displays appropriate body language -a look away- indicating that he does not wish to socialize. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/12/17 During his initial medical examination, Max attempted to bite multiple times; he would not allow handling or restraint. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the behavior demonstrated in the care center and Max’s minimal tolerance of touch, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive methods are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression.
