A volunteer writes: Our little muscle man, er…I mean puppy, Max, in his pristine white coat, gets up from his bed as I unlatch his door. Easy to leash, once we’re outside he uses the ‘facilities’ immediately confirming that he’s housetrained as advised by his former owner. He pulled hard on the leash as we walked to the park, but checked up often as we went. Once in the park he posed for some pictures, rejected both my treats in such an adorable way (sniff, nose up and look away), and then lay down at my feet while I took some notes. We’re told that Max lived nicely with a 2 year old, and was playful with an 8 and 11 year old with whom he spent time, lived with two other large dogs, doesn’t guard his food, enjoys baths and likes to play tug and with toys. Max ignored other dogs we passed while walking, even a small yappy one, allowed me to pet him all over, and each time we stopped and then started walking again he started wagging his tail! According to his previous owner Max can get overly excited when going for a walk and will sometimes try to grab the leash. Max was a bit shy with me, but when I saw him later in the day with staff he came running over to me burying his head in my lap and snuggling. He’s a baby who needs love, structure, and some positive reinforcement training to learn that the leash is not a toy. He didn’t do it with me at all during our time together (but being with us is all new to him). He’s used to a family and is hoping that a new person or family will find him and make him theirs. Our little white muscle man is waiting!
PROFILE :
Max is a 10 month old male American Pitt Bull Terrier who is being surrendered for biting his owner. The bite did not break skin. Owner bought Max from a breeder 4 months ago. Owner stated Max has no medical issues but has never taken him to a vet.
Max is friendly around strangers. He lived with a 2 year old child and was relaxed and tolerant of the child. He spent time with 8 and 11 year old children and he was playful with them. He plays exuberantly with kids and adults. He lived with a 1 year old male American Pitt Bull and a 9 month old American Pitt Bull. He was playful and tolerant of both dogs. They play in a somewhat rough manner with each other. Max bit his owner on 09/15/16 and bit the male dog on 09/16/16. These incidents took place when taking Max outside. Max becomes overly excited when he is going to be taken outside. He goes after the leash and after the other two dogs. Owner got bit on the arm trying to put the leash on the collar. This behavior only occurs when owner is going to walk Max.
Owner stated the only behavior problem Max has is his issue with when it’s time for a walk. He barks at fireworks. Max will growl if you attempt to touch is water bowl when he is drinking. Owner stated he only gives him water once a day. Owner stated he monitors his water intake. He is not bothered if his food is touched while he is eating, if a treat of any kind is taken away, if a toy is taken away, if pushed off furniture, if held, if disturbed while sleeping, if brushed, if someone unfamiliar knocks on the door, or if someone unfamiliar approaches the owner. He enjoys baths and owner has never trimmed his nails.
Max is described as confident, pushy, and excitable with a medium activity level. He will follow his owner around when home. He likes to play with balls, squeaky, chew, and rope style toys. He likes to play tug. He is kept mostly indoors and sleeps in the living room. He is fed dry dog food, Blue Buffalo, 3 cups once a day. He is house-trained and does potty anywhere outside. He is well behaved when left home alone. He has never been left alone in a yard. He does well for 8 hours or so in a crate. He knows the command sit. For exercise owner takes him on brisk walks on a leash and he pulls lightly. He is walked off leash and come when called.
Max did not show any signs of aggression during intake. He did go after my rope for a few seconds but was corrected and stopped. He tolerated handling like collaring and scanning.

DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:
Summary
PLAYGROUP:
When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Max is initially a bit cautious of greeting, but allows approach and sniffing. He becomes more comfortable and then begins to approach and sniff on his own accord. He appears slightly sexually motivated, however is unaltered. Previous owner cites that “He lived with a 1 year old male pit bull and a 9 month old American pit bull. He was playful and tolerant. However, bit the male dog.” The circumstances of the bite were not elaborated. The behavior team feels that Max should require in-depth consultation on the behaviors observed in our care center and in the former home, and slow, monitored introduction with any resident dogs in a future home.
