04/02/16 14:34 Basic Information: Max is a 2 year old male Pit Bull that has no past or current medical issues that the owner is aware of. Owner has had Max for 5 months. However, owner has known Max since he was a puppy. He was given to owner by a friend who was not longer to care for him. Socialization: According to the owner, Max loves to play with her 12 yr. old son in a gentle manner and can be protective of him when she and her son would play wrestle. Max has lived with multiple dogs and has interacted with them in a playful manner. Max has never been around cats, so behavior around them is unknown. Max has attacked another dog but has never bitten a person. For a New Family to Know: Max is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful with a high activity level. He would do best as an only pet according to the owner. Max was kept mostly indoors and was fed Pedigree dry dog food as well as table food. He is mostly housebroken and only had accidents when owner was late returning home from work. On the leash, Max pulls very hard.

Max came into our center as an owner surrender after Max and a Chihuahua that lived in the house had an altercation that resulted in Max causing injury to the small dog that resulted in death. According to the owner, Max loves to play with 12 year old son in a gentle manner but may become protective if anyone in the family play wrestled with the child. It is reported Max has lived with multiple dogs and before this incident has always interacted in a playful manner. Behavior around cats is unknown. Max is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful with a high activity level. Max pulled hard on leash for his relief walk. He was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment area. Max allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, tail wagging. He stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, tail wagging, body soft. Max followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, a bit distracted. He did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts, lip lick, tail wag. Max was playful with Toy briefly, quickly losing interest. He approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, tail at spine level, relaxed. The Behavior Team feels Max would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children. It is strongly recommended that he should be the only resident dog. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is wagging with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, a bit distracted Squeeze 1/ 2: 2. Dog does not pull back paw, lip lick, tail wag Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, engaged briefly and then quickly lost interest Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.
