03/29/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Max came to us as an owner surrender due to the owner no longer having time to care for Max. According to the owner Max has been around children of all ages and is recorded to play with them gently, but can sometimes play roughly with adults due his size. The owner stated that Max will growl and snap if someone attempts to remove his food while eating, and will growl is someone attempts to take his toys or treats from him. It was reported that Max may occasionally destroy certain household items such as shoes or sneakers and it is in the best interest for a potential adopter to keep this items away from Max. Around other dogs the owner reported that Max will hard bark and growl at them which was witnessed during his playgroup session while in the shelter. Max can be seen with what appears to be conflicted behavior in his kennel sometimes at the front of the kennel barking strongly, and other times with low crouching body language. He was eager to come out of his kennel though once the handler opened the door and pulled a bit strongly during his relief walk. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items, though he did have some tense and stiff body language during the sensitivity and squeeze items. He had stiff body language during the toy test becoming rigid in body as the assessor attempted to take the toy from him with the assess-a-hand. The behavior department believes that Max will best with a rescue that can provide the behavior modification necessary before placement into a home. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears back, lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (needs coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw, body is a bit tense. Squeeze 2:2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw, body is a bit tense. Toy 1: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is stiff.
03/29/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When Max approaches the gate he begins to hard bark and growl. Due to this behavior he was introduced to the other dog with a muzzle on as a precaution. Once let in the pen he becomes uncomfortable and increases his distance between him and the greeter dog by running away.
