BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY

Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable

Recommendations:: Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: New Hope Only: Based on Max’s bite history in his previous home environment, the behavior department believes he would best be set up to succeed if placed with a rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable home environment.

Potential challenges: : Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: On leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Max has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them and barking. We cannot be sure if this reaction is due to excitement and frustration, though we recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. He will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. Multiple bite history/risk of future aggression: Max has a multiple-bite history solely with the other resident dog in his previous home. He appears to have escalated quickly to snapping and biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Max needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Max as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression
