A Little Bit About Me…
A volunteer writes: A pink nose like a cherry on top of a vanilla body – so sweet! And, Angelo wins the best smile of the day award, his ear to ear grin capturing my heart. Angelo is quiet and shy in his kennel, but thrilled to be leashed and out for a walk. His leash manners are lovely but when loud noises or sudden movements are near he will startle momentarily and then quickly regain his composure. Off leash he’s a cuddler, happy to join me wherever I’m sitting, paws in my lap for a kiss or two. He likes being close to his person, enjoying caresses and sweet talk and shows off his ‘sit’. A quick game of tug and then fetch (he brings it back and drops the toy at my feet), makes his tail wag even harder than before. He’s a bit shy and uncertain, but with love, easy movement, and a soft touch he will thrive and know what love and security is. His coat is clean and pristine, his weight perfect for his size, and his gentle, soft personality will win your heart. Slow and easy wins the race, and certainly will win Angelo’s heart.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
My medical notes are…
Details on my behavior are…
Date of assessment: 23-Feb-2018
Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, ears are back, tail is down, relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, eyes are averted, tail is between legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends (may need coaxing to approach). Dog is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor.
Paw squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.
Paw squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his/her paw.
Toy: 1. No interest.
Summary: Angelo was initially anxious upon entering the assessment room, focused on exit. He eventually warmed up to handlers, allowed all handling, soliciting attention.
PLAY GROUP :
2/21: Angelo is muzzled for off leash introduction due to prior bite history involving another dog. He is fearful when approached and attempts to keep distance.
2/23: Angelo is introduced without a muzzle to a female dog. He is fearful but allows greeting. He avoids her when she attempts to solicit play.
Date of initial: 20-Feb-2018
Summary: During his initial medical exam, Angelo was very tense, submissive urination, tail tucked.
ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Angelo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center, he displays as a medium level of energy.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Angelo is easy to remove from kennel, he walks nicely on leash, and is focused on exit. Once outside he is visibly more relaxed. When warmed
up to handler’s he is affectionate, solicits petting, and will sit on handler’s feet, leaning in.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Recommendations: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments: Due to the behavior seen in the care center, we feel that Angelo may be intimidated by young children. He needs a slow approach and time to warm up. He should never be forced to interact with new people, and should be allowed to greet and initiate an interaction at his own pace.
Potential challenges: Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:
Anxiety:
Angelo has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, focused on exit, panting, some pacing. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Angelo, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.
