12/02/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
12/02/16 13:03 Maui is a deaf American Pitbull Terrier. She is fearful and hostile towards strangers. She’s relaxed and playful around children (10 months and 2 years) and plays gently and exuberantly with them and adults she knows. Maui lives with two other dogs, a chihuahua and her mom. Both dogs are older in age and don’t really play with her but she remains relaxed and playful around them. Maui spent a short time with a newborn kitten in her owner’s home but were kept separated. A year ago Maui got into a fight with her sister-dog and her owner did get bit when splitting them apart but she has not bitten a person or animal since then. She’s not bothered by her owner taking away her food bowl but she will growl when a bone or toy was at stake. Maui is also not bothered when she’s pushed off of furniture or awoken from her slumber. She will try to push out of a hold or restrain though. Maui loves the water but does not like getting baths. She struggles to get out. Maui enjoys getting brushed but her owner never clipped her nails so it’s unknown how she’d react. Maui barks when new people approach her home and people she knows. Maui’s owner describes her as playful, goofy, but sometimes anxious. She has a high activity level but loves being cuddled and laying under the covers with her owner. When her owner was home with her, Maui liked laying in the living room by her crate (which she tends to get possessive over). When in the playing mood, Maui enjoys playing fetch with balls but also loves stuffed animals (especially her teddy bear), squeaky toys, and chew bones. She also loves playing tug. Maui has been kept mostly indoors since their move to NYC from CT and enjoys sleeping in her crate. She’s house-trained but has mini accidents daily that always occur in the same spot of the home. When she’s outside, Maui goes potty wherever she can squat. When home alone, Maui stays in her crate but will bark if her owners are gone for a while. She’s used to a metal crate with a tray bottom, full of blankets and toys. Since she cannot hear, she knows hand signals for commands such as sit and come. For exercise, Maui enjoys brisk long walks and running. Maui pulls hard on a leash due to her size and strength but on ly when she sees something that excites her. Maui enjoys a mixture of wet and dry food (specifically Pedigree chicken flavor) and would eat 2 cups, twice a day. Her favorite treats are Beggin’ Strips.
12/06/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: We think the “special” in SPECIAL needs should be permanently capitalized, because, they’re, well, more special than needy! And Maui is no exception-as a deaf dog, she might come with a few extra requirements and a little more patience, but it only makes her more exclusive! Her former owner even indicates that she’s already got the groundwork on her commands, and knows some hand signals for sit and come. She is mostly housetrained, has lived harmoniously with young children, and two other dogs, a small one and a large one, and loves to play in water and eat her favorite treats: beggin strips. Maui is crate trained, and prefers her den with lots of toys and blankets littering the bottom. When I let her loose in the yard, she was all wiggles and wags…jumping gently on me almost immediately to give me a soft hug. When I sat on the bench, she was instantaneously in my lap-perked up by her paws, watching passersby and sneaking a few tender kisses. Maui is looking for someone who can continue with her training and give her lots of love, toys and treats. Maui is a little tropical oasis in a cold, wintery city. Ask to meet her today!
