08/12/16 13:36 Mason is a 6 year old male white American Bulldog mix who is being surrendered due to health concerns of the owner. Mason has been in the home for almost 6 years. Mason lives with in his home with 2 small children and 5 adults. He is interactive and playful with all family members. There are no other animals in the home. If a visitor comes to the home he will bark to alert the family and will sniff for introductions when the enter. Mason gets alot of exercise on leash and also goes to dog run. He is loose and interactive with other dogs in the run. If her encounters a cat on a walk he will attempt to give chase. Mason is house broken and does not have accidents inside. Mason is tolerant of a bath and may resist a nail trim but is not defensive. Mason allows a bear hug from the owner. Mason guards his food and if you attempt to move it he will ward off with growl and owner reports he may bite but has never actually done this. Owner asks him to sit before feeding. He does not guard his toys or treats. If on the bed or couch he may try to resist getting off. Sometimes he has to be physically removed but Mason is not defensive for this. He knows the cue sit and stay. When the family is home he likes to be where they are. He enjoys playing tug of war and prefers eating dry food. Upon intake Mason was receptive to introduction and rolled on his back for a belly rub. Mason allowed all handling but grumbled a little bit when being collared. Counselor was able to scan for microchip (negative) collar and photograph. Mason walked well on leash and was responsive to guidance.

08/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mason previously lived with 5 adults and 2 small children. The owner stated Mason is friendly and playful towards the family members. The owner mentioned if Mason encounters a cat on a walk he will attempt to give chase. It was reported by the owner Mason will guard/growl his food when attempting to remove it away from him, and he may bite. At intake it was reported Mason was friendly but grumbled when being collared, he allowed all handling. During SAFER Mason came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and playful towards the assessor. Not all handling items were able to be conducted as Mason snapped at the assessor on the second paw squeeze item and growl and bit the assess-a-hand on toy item. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 5. Dog snaps at the assessor. Toy 1: 5. Dog growls and bites the assess-a-hand. Dog-dog: When off leash at the Care Center, Mason approaches the gate with a soft, loose body. He greets the helper dog briefly but mostly explores the yard. He does become slightly sexually motivated but responds well to interruptions.
