DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Marvelo is nervous and avoids male and female dogs. He is more social and confident when socializing in a group of small dogs. According to his previous owner, Marvelo lived with a male and female shih tzu. The owner states that he would try to play with them but would play too rough, and thus he would keep them separate. The Behavior Department recommends that Marvelo be placed with respectful resident dogs. All initial introductions should be done slowly and under supervision. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 03/05/17 Marvelo tolerated handling during his initial medical exam though appeared a bit tense. ENERGY LEVEL: Marvelo is described as having a high energy level.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Marvelo is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Though he has improved during his stay at our care centers, Marvelo continues to give all appropriate warning signals when uncomfortable. Due to the consistent behavior displayed in shelter, the behavior department recommends placement with a New Hope rescue group until he can acclimate to his new home environment for the behavior to be further assessed. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is advised; force-free, reward based training only is recommended. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Marvelo takes some time to warm up to new people, though he shows good coping skills when uncomfortable. Marvelo may do best with an experienced foster prepared to allow him to warm up to new people and new environments slowly. Use of treats and other rewards will help to make new experiences positive.
