04/22/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/22/17 18:16 Clients came in a car and Martin was good during the ride. He was barking and lunging at other dogs when they were walking him. He was doing the same thing in the lobby. He was friendly with people though and allowed all handling. He allowed all handling from the counselor and allowed the counselor to collar.
04/24/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Martin is a little peanut dipped in pure chocolate and vanilla. He is only six months of age and was brought all alone and initially a bit scared to the care center. A few walks put his fears at rest or almost and he was quite happy and playful when I got to him, all tail wagging and bright eyed…Martin pulls quite a bit on the leash, sniffing a lot his new territory and doing his business as soon as we leave the building. He seems a little uncomfortable with some other dogs met but maybe it is because he has not fallen back completely on his four, yet. Martin is at ease in the yard, sits on and off for treats and enjoys being close to his human, snuggling tightly to her on a chair. Martin needs a safe home and a loving master or family to grow up into a wonderful adult and pet. Will you open the door to your heart to this cute little mensch? Martin is at the Manhattan Care Center.
04/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/22/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/24/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up high on assessor and barks. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Martin appeared anxious during his assessment, barking and whining throughout. At times he sought comfort and attention from the handler, but at other times he jumped away. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When introduced off leash to dogs in the care center Martin approaches, greets, sniffs, and lingers by the rear end of the female greeter, attempting to mount. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/22/17 During his initial medical exam, Martin was very tense and growled. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Martin so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful: Though he mostly appears social, Martin has moved away from people and growled at times in the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Martin the option to walk away from any social interaction. Martin should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Martin’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Martin would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. _X_Anxiety: Martin has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER. We have no known history on Martin, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. If this behavior does arise in the new home, giving Bear other things to do such as puzzle toys and the use of positive reinforcement, reward based training is recommended.
