07/21/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/21/16 13:59 Marshmellow A1082082 is an approx 6 year old Shih tzu mix. He was given to the owner as a gift and is being surrendered because the owner was recently evicted from her own. He has not been to the vet in the last year and he currently has no known health issues. Socialization Marshmellow is very fearful with strangers. He plays exuberantly with the adults in the home. He is gentle with children and is hesitant around other dogs. He has not been around other cats and has not bitten anyone or any other animal. Behavior Marshmellow was walked 3 times a day. He is not bothered by thunderstorms/fireworks. He does not like when you take his food bowl away or his treats. He will growl and protect his food. He does not mind nail trimming or brushing and loves bath time but only the owner’s son can bathe him. He does not bark when someone unknown approaches. For a new family to know Marshmellow is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, and mellow with the family. He has a medium activity level. At home, he follows the owners around the house and wants to play. He sleeps on his doggie bed. He does have chew toys and squeaky toys. He was fed Pedigree dry dog food. He loves belly rubs and petting and seeks attention all the time. Behavior during intake Marshmellow was not friendly and snapped at the scanner when we went to scan (-) him. The owner collared him. He was leashed, photographed, carried and placed inside of a kennel.

08/03/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Marshmellow is an approximately 6 year old shih-tzu with no known health issues being surrendered to the care centers due to the owner being evicted from her home. It is reported that Marshmellow is very fearful around strangers but would play exuberantly with the adults in his home. According to the owner, he is hesitant around other dogs and has never been around cats. It was also noted that Marshmellow will growl if his food bowl or treats are taken away, showing potential guarding, as the owner reports that he will “protect” it. His owner had also said that with their family, Marshmellow is friendly, affectionate and playful. During his stay at the care center, Marshmellow delivered a bite when a staff member attempted to collar him. It was said that Marshmellow displayed no sign of concern while collaring and had been soliciting attention to his handler prior to the bite. Marshmellow has been nervous and fearful during his stay with us, while he occasionally tolerates minimal touch and handling, he is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER at this time. He has shown to have a low theshold for aggression with strangers and we believe that an assessment is unlikely to provide any additional useful information as he has already established that in uncomfortable situations he will respond and react. The behavior department recommends placement with a New Hope partner. Any group taking on responsibility for Marshmellow should plan to work with a reward-based behavior modification trainer to countercondition and desensitize Marshmellow to strangers in a safe setting to prevent further bites. Marshmellow will need careful lifelong management to prevent additional bites and to decrease his anxiety around strangers.
