A volunteer writes: Looking for a best buddy? Well, what a coincidence, so is Marley! You two should meet! Marley is a gorgeous boy, friendly and outgoing, happy to make new friends and snuggle close with a happy tail wag. He’s lived with young children, ages 1 and 6, and was playful and tolerant with them, plays a bit harder with adults (smart boy knows the difference!), lived with two cats and always initiated play, licks one of the cats even when she hisses at him, and loves to play with dogs he meets. Marley doesn’t guard his stuff, is crate trained, housetrained (check), knows ‘sit’ (check), “lie down”, “come”, “stay” and “up-up” (meaning stand on back legs only). Impressive! When I sat down to take some notes Marley was in my lap, tail wagging a mile a minute, and giving me kisses. When a small off leash Yorkie ran over to us he wagged his tail in an appropriate greeting. Marley is a family dog through and through and looking for a new family with whom to share his life. He’s used to sleeping with his person, and while he’s now sleeping alone we’d love to change that for him. Ask to meet him when you visit.
PROFILE :
Marley is a 2 year old male large breed dog. His owner got him at 2 months old when his previous owner’s dog had puppies. She had to surrender him because she moved to a home that doesn’t allow pets. Marley is apparently healthy.
Marley is friendly and outgoing with strangers. He lived with 2 children ages 1-6 and was friendly, affectionate, playful, and tolerant with them. He’s usually gentle with them, but if adults initiate play, he becomes somewhat rough. He is friendly and plays exuberantly with dogs he meets outside. He lived with two cats. He initiates play with both cats though only one engages. He persists and licks the other cat when she hisses at him. Marley hasn’t bit anyone.
Marley doesn’t mind when someone takes food/treats/toys, moves him off furniture, holds/restrains him, wakes him up, or brushes him. He’s nervous during baths. He’s friendly with strangers that approach his home/family.
Marley’s family describes him as friendly, affectionate, fun, curious, and high energy. He follows his family. Marley plays tug and fetch with rope toys and sticks. He lived inside and slept with his owner. He ate dry Blue Buffalo food and enjoyed Blue Buffalo apple treats. He knows the cues: sit, “up-up” (stand on rear legs only), lie down, come, and stay. Marley is crated while home alone and is well-behaved, but potties in his crate if left for more than 8 hours. He’s housetrained and doesn’t have accidents while his family is home. He had play time alone in his yard with a 4′ chain link fence and dug under and escaped a few times, most recently 3-4 months ago. Marley went for brisk walks and runs and pulls on the leash.
Marley had a loose, wiggly body and wagging tail while we pet him, scanned him (-), collared him, and photographed him. He jumped up, stood against us, leaned into us, and pressed his head into our laps while we pet him.

INTAKE BEHAVIOR:

MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
Date of initial
ENERGY LEVEL:
Marley’s owner describes him as having high energy which matches what we have seen at the care center. Marley is a young, social, enthusiastic dog who wil lbenefit from daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend walks, runs, exercise, and play to positively direct his enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
Potential challenges:
_X_Strength/leash pulling – Owner reports Marley pulls on leash. His owner must be prepared and able to handle a dog of his size and strength. It is recommended that Marley be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which helps diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
