A volunteer writes:
With the softest, sweetest expression, Marlene welcomes me to her kennel knowing she’s going out. Likely housetrained she goes potty right away and we’re off to the park. She’s a petite little girl with patchy fur and a tail that curls up into an O. Her patchy coat is likely caused from poor nutrition and having fed a litter or two as its clear she’s been a mom. She seems to like other dogs, happily greeting all who passed our pen clearly wanting to play. Her leash manners could use a little work, or she may do better in a harness; she enjoys treats so with some positive reinforcement training she’ll learn quickly. Sitting when I asked her to, she takes treats gently and then found a ball to play with and had a grand time! She gives chase and then jumps up on the bench with it for a little chomp, and then back down to play some more. Hugs and kisses come next and trust me, she excels at everything she does. This little peanut is adorable! I went inside to get her kennel ready and when I came back out she was waiting quietly, greeting me like I had been gone for days! Petite, fun and loving, Marlene is ready to start a new life as a cherished companion. I can’t imagine a greater joy than watching this little girl blossom with good care. Behavior – Experience Home
Marlene walks calmly on leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, wagging tail. She was calm and relaxed during handling. Marlene played tug-of-war with the leash during tag interaction but wasn’t difficult to distract her. She was a bit difficult to push out of the food bowl, but had soft body language. Marlene was not interested in toys and took the rawhide away with a soft body language. She was relaxed when approaching a friendly dog, but was not playful.
Marlene is an active dog she need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation. The behavior department feels that she can go to an experience home.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 3. Dog responds with her tail high, ears forward, mouth likely closed for at least half of the assessment item, body stiff and body checks the Assessor. Dog is often focused on other stimuli in the room.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.
Food 2. Dog follows the dish with her tail down, body likely a bit stiff. Dog lifts head after a bit of pressure from hand to cheek.
Toy 1. No interest.
Rawhide 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. she does not place her body between you and the rawhide.
Dog – dog 1. Dog approaches the helper, soft body, tail neutral, but not playful.
