A volunteer writes:

“Maribell” means “star of the sea” and I can certainly imagine 1 year-old Maribell starring as Ariel in the puppy version of “The Little Mermaid.” Beautiful and lithe with her half-white, half-cinnamon face, she waits peacefully in her kennel, calmly gazing at me with her amber eyes while excitement and noise erupt all around her. As we head outside I stop to marvel at the fact that Maribell is only a puppy! Such wonderful leash manners, so calm, so demure! She seems to be an “old soul” in a very young body. Moments later we’re on the street headed to the park for our walk. While Maribell certainly makes note of the bustling action all around her, her main concern is looking back to make sure I’m still along for the ride. She’s also quite house trained taking care of  her “business” the moment we exit the shelter doors. Soon we’ve reached our destination and this is where the puppy in Maribell emerges. Squirrels, puppies, birds, oh my! All of them provide endless fascination for our beauty and she pulls towards them each time in excitement. She is quick to take correction and eventually settles next to me on a bench for kisses and butt rubs (mostly the latter). We have a wonderful time before heading back where she easily slides into her kennel giving me one more kiss for the road. Maribell is possibly expecting and I can only imagine what a wonderful mama this lovely girl would be, despite her very young age. A puppy herself, she would also make for the perfect addition to any home. As Ariel sings in “The Little Mermaid,” “oh how I wish I could be part of you world!” Could you make Maribell part of yours? Maribell is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s Animal Care Center.
SAFER:
Maribell walks calmly on leash.  She was calm and relaxed during handling. Maribell was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. She was not interested in toys.

Maribell did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home.

Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.
Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick.
Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds.
Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds.
Toy 1: No interest.

PLAYGROUP
When off leash with other dogs, Maribel allows greeting but keeps to herself.

2/25 update:
Maribell greets politely.  She offers a correction when the other dog becomes pushy when solicitng.

2/26 update:
Maribell is anxious in the yard, pacing and ignoring the other dog. She offers correction when mounted.
