07/18/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Margery is a survivor. She came to us underweight and actively lactating but without her puppies. I met her yesterday, a few days down the line and although, so rightly, she is still a very hungry caterpillar, she acts like one blessed doggy to find herself in our company. She is like a little girl, a teacher’s pet. Her eyes are big, happy; her smile large. She is in heaven on earth, squeezing herself tight against her favorite staff member, but also welcoming others. She is so needy of affection and comfort. Margery is a good walker and does her business on the way. She does not mind nearing other dogs in the street but seems a bit out of place in playgroups with her peers. She is a very pretty gal who, well fed, cared for, and most importantly loved, will look absolutely beautiful. Margery got a glimpse at a few good things humans can do here at the care center. Come and meet her in person. Offer her the life she dreams of…a steady safe home and the love of a human. She will be thankful forever.
07/16/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 7/14/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/16/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game with coaxing. She is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Minimal interest, dog sniffs toy. Summary: Margery appeared anxious during her assessment, whining and focusing on the door. She was social with the assessor at times, jumping up and nudging the assessor’s hand for attention, and she allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: Margery has displayed anxious behavior during interaction with dogs in the care center, and has displayed minimal interest in socializing. The behavior department recommends allowing Margery a period of decompression outside the shelter environment before immediate introductions to unfamiliar dogs. Future introductions should be conducted at a slow pace, to respectful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Margery was tense. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/14/17 During her initial medical exam, Margery was tense but allowed handling. When startled she snapped at the air. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Margery so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the level of anxiety Margery displays at the care center, we recommend a home without young children. Older children should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Margery has been a bit fearful in the care center and snapped during her medical exam. It is important to always go slow and give Margery the option to walk away from any social interaction. Margery should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Margery’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Margery would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. _X_Anxiety: Margery has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Margery, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment. Adopters should be prepared to give Margery things to do, such as Kongs and puzzle toys, in the evenrt that she is anxious in the home. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used.
