04/19/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Whenever I’m with Margara I can’t help but think she’s a gal worthy of her own theme song (and maybe envision her standing out in a crowd and throwing a hat skyward like Mary Tyler Moore). She is beautiful, confident, fun, a bit of a tomboy, and SO sweet!! As far as I can tell she’s friendly to everyone, but give her a treat and you’ll instantly be upgraded to BFF-status; she takes them nicely, already knows “sit”, and with those warm brown eyes has a begging face that can’t be denied. She hasn’t pulled much on leash when I’ve walked her, looks up often, and steadily wags her tail throughout. She is energetic and can be jumpy and lightly mouthy (in an “I love you!” kind of way), but that’s where her “sit” skills and love of toys come in handy. She likes toys so much that she was delighted at the sight of a measly catnip mouse we encountered in the hallway and when I gave her a stuffed bird she pranced around with it like a pony and held it in her mouth as she cocked her head at some real birds a foot away (they were much less exciting!). She always makes the sweetest eye contact, kisses my hands, and thrives on attention. She is a DOLL and would love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
04/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 4/4/17 Unaltered female, Stray Other notes: Margara was friendly and allowed handling from counselors. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 4/6/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Summary: Margara was social and allowed handling during her handling assessment. She was friendly and showed no concerning behavior. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Selective: These dogs can succeed with certain other dogs, but may be more selective or picky. They may dislike certain ‘types’ of dogs or styles of dog play so they may require extra supervision when interacting with other dogs. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Margara is playful, but displays assertive posturing by mounting male and female dogs. Margara was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Margara be placed with resident dogs that are tolerant of her mounting behavior.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/4/17 Margara was a bit tense, but allowed all handling during her initial medical examination. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Margara so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_Recommend no dog parks (Due to the display of assertive posturing Margara has displayed and the propensity for that behavior to not be received well by other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Margara initially not be taken to dog parks to give her adequate time to decompress from the shelter and her behavior towards other dogs be further addressed in a more controlled environment.)
04/05/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION

She responds well to handler interruptions and explores the pen. 4/6: Margara displays slightly stiff body language when greeting a novel female dog.
