08/23/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Limited Profile 7/25/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Bite history: Yes, Marcus has had two incidents where he has bitten. The first time, the owner was attempting to stop Marcus when he was mounting the furniture. He pulled Marcus away and attempted to put him in the crate when Marcus turned and bit his hand multiple times, breaking skin. The second incident occurred when a staff member at the care center was attempting to leash Marcus, he jumped up and attempted to grab the leash, grabbing the staff member’s hand and breaking skin. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/23/17 Summary: Due to Marcus’ multiple bite history, including a bite while in the care center, we do not feel he is a good candidate for a handling assessment at this time due to safety concerns. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: Summary INTAKE BEHAVIOR: Upon intake, Marcus had a soft body and allowed handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/26/17 During his initial medical exam, Marcus was active, social, and allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Marcus so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to Marcus’ bite history, we recommend an adult only home. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to his multiple bite history, the behavior department recommends Cinnamon be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Marcus to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Marcus to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Marcus presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: Marcus becomes quickly over aroused at the sight of the leash, rapidly escalating and quickly tipping over to aggression, biting the handler’s hand. Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Marcus to new and unfamiliar situations. _X_Multiple-bite history/risk of future aggression: Marcus has a multiple-bite history and escalates quickly to biting, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Marcus needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Marcus as more aversive techniques are likely to increase the risk of aggression. _X_Leash-biting
