Marcelina
Hello, my name is Marcelina. My animal id is #18825. I am a desexed female brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 10 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 20-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.
Marcellina is at risk for medical reasons, having been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex, which is contagious to other dogs. Behaviorally, we recommend that Marcellina would be best suited to a dog experienced home.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Need incentive to get up in the morning? Need a jogging partner? Marcelina isn’t going to let you slack off, as she loves to run and play, has a lot of energy, and is ready to go go go. All puppy bouncy and fun, she’s absolutely stunning in her mahogany coat with gold accents, her sweet eyes make soft contact, especially when I have a treat in my hand. She wants to meet every dog we pass in the park, and is so good with other dogs she’s a playgroup greeter dog, meaning she’s social, playful and tolerant of other dog behaviors. She’s also been named Staff Pick of the Week, so honors abound for Miss Marcelina. Marcelina is looking for an active person or family, as she’s all puppy fun and energetic. Couch potatoes need not apply, but if a gorgeous, fun, affectionate and active pup is your ideal partner, look no further, you’ve found her.
My medical notes are…
Weight: 42 lbs

Summary:: Marcelina was very sweet and gentle.
ENERGY LEVEL:: Marcelina’s previous owner described her as having a high level of activity. She is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: While Marcelina presents to be a challenge in the care center with her on leash dog reactivity, she remains highly social when interacting with her human caretakers. Marcelina is playful, exuberant and actively seeks/solicits attention; she has displayed no handling concerns.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Potential challenges: : On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Marcelina has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them and barking. As Marcelina plays well with other dogs, this reaction is likely due to excitement and frustration, we recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. She will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs. Leash-biting: Marcelina has grabbed the leash in her mouth when she gets excited, but seems to quickly relinquish it. We recommend trading her a toy for the leash if this behavior appears in a future home. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach her to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash.
