04/04/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: You can’t have pancakes without Grade A maple syrup and you can’t have a Grade A snuggle sesh without our sweet and lovely Maple. 2 years-old and brought in as a stray, Maple has been a mama in her short lifetime and it shows. She is affectionate and warm and often paces the yard, sniffing every nook and cranny. She seems to be searching for something. Maybe a number of things taken or somehow separated from her. Still, she remains bright and happy. She trots over to me consistently in between sniffs for pets and head scratches and of course I’m happy to oblige. She is beautiful in her black and white mask, perpetually dressed for the ball, her coat shiny and slick. At the end of our time together she cries softly as I place her back in her kennel. Another unsuccessful search. She has still not found what she’s looking for. And maybe she never will. But hopefully she will find something new to fill her heart again. The love of a forever family. Maple is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
04/01/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Maple pulls a bit on the leash. She was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body, low wag. Maple was calm and relaxed during handling. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Maple took the toy away but had soft body language. Maple did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful but unresponsive when touched. Approaches the Assessor when the game ends. Dog is likely crouching, may have long lip or lip lick. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy.
04/01/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Maple engages in play with males and females. The behavior department recommends that she may be placed into a home with another social, playful dog. She arrived as a stray so in home behaviors with dogs are unknown. When off leash with other dogs Maple is bouncy and playful. She spins and attempts to get the helper dog to chase her. 4/4 update: Maple engages in play with other playful dogs. 4/5 update: Maple engages in soft play with males and females.
