02/04/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Maple came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Maple was shy and approached the counselor slowly, she allowed all handling. During SAFER Maple came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, she was friendly and social towards the assessor with a slow approach, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Maple was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Maple was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Maple can be shy at times but is also social and friendly. In addition, we recommend that introductions are done slowly, and Maple be given the opportunity to interact at her own pace, so the behavior department feels she can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1 & 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Maple initially avoids greeting and is anxious, pacing around the pen with a stress pant. She eventually enters the pen with the helper dog but unfortunately he barks as she approaches and the interaction is discontinued.
