03/18/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/18/16 19:35 Manila is an adult female American Staffordshire mix. She was found tethered with a wire in front of a tire shop. Neighbors reported that she had been left there for 3 days. She was lying down and wasn’t approaching people. Her finder offered her hot dogs and she approached her and took them gently. She was tolerant when she switched her leashes, walked her, and put her in a crate. Manila was a little tense in her kennel. She allowed me to put a leash on her and scan her (-). I talked to her but couldn’t easily coax her out. She wouldn’t look at us or sniff the treats we offered her. She lied down with her head down but sometimes lifted her head when she heard us opening cans of food or bags of treats. When I was moving her kennel, to give her more space to walk out, she walked out and slowly walked around the room, sniffing things with a low body and tail. She sniffed us and watched us and lied down and rested her head on her paws. She didn’t react while I collared her or pet her. When I tried to pull Manila on her leash to walk with me, she bit and held her leash but allowed us to take it out of her mouth. She allowed us to pick her up and carry her. Her ears and eyebrows moved around, but she didn’t otherwise react during her vaccines and exam. Manila never growled during her intake and though she bit her leash, she never snapped at us. She would lift her head highest and her ears would perk up when she saw other dogs.
03/23/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: So quiet in her kennel she steps forward when I open her gate, but as soon as I leash her she drops to the ground. Found tied up with a wire outside of a store, people reported that she had been there several days, so she may now have a fear of something around her neck. She allows petting as I sit with her in her kennel and chatted, inching forward to be closer to me. Inch by inch she is getting braver, and staff used another dog to help guide her outside as she seems to like other dogs perking up when around them. Walking around outside off leash exploring the pen, she enjoys some treats and when other dogs come by walks to the gate to say hello. When it was time to come inside Manila walked a few steps on leash and then pancaked refusing to walk any further. Staff picked her up and carried her back into her kennel. Manila needs a loving and patient home in which to blossom and overcome her fears at her own pace. I look into her eyes and see confusion and sadness and who can blame her. She’s captured our hearts and we all want to see her eyes light up with joy and love. It’s there……she just needs to find love to make it all surface. How big is your heart? Is there room for Manila? 03/21/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Manila came into our center after a member of the public found her tied outside a tire shop with a wire, neighbors reporting she had been there for several days. During intake, she was tense and hesitant to come out of crate, eventually walked out lured with hot dogs. Manilla walks slowly and unsurely, stops and drops low anytime there is too much tension on the leash. She enthusiastically walks towards other dogs (still slowly, but perked up). Though extremely fearful, Manila is tolerant of all handling when moving slowly. She allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, eyes averted, body trembling. She stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, head low, tail tucked. Manila did not follow at the end of the leash for Tag game, standing still, head low, but did not respond to each pass. She pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Manilla showed no interest in Toy. She approached the helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff. The Behavior Team feels Manila would do best with an Experienced owner who is comfortable with nervous, fearful dogs. She may initially benefit from a calm, quiet, structured environment so she can relax and know what to expect. We recommend a slow introduction where Manila approaches her new adopters at her own pace. She may benefit from having another resident dog to help her become comfortable. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body is trembling; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is tucked, head low, mouth closed. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, does not follow at end of leash, stands still. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back paw. Toy 1. No interest. Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, and lip neutral
03/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Manila has been cautious during off-leash interaction with other dogs, and has not yet become comfortable interacting during her stay here. Based on this information the behavior department recommends allowing her time to acclimate to her new surroundings before following up on her behavior around other dogs at this time. Manila arrived into our care as a stray, so in-home behaviors around dogs are unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Manila is fearful while in the yard- low body, tucked tail. She offers a low growl with approach. 3/24 update: Manila keeps to herself, only approaching the helper dog once to sniff briefly before walking away.
