02/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/2/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/5/17 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is down, body tense, mouth closed. Tag: 5. Dog bares teeth. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Mango was fearful throughout the assessment and bared teeth during tag, the rest of the handling portions were omitted. She also bared teeth when leashed to leave the room. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash with other dogs Mango sniffs calmer dogs but will otherwise keep to herself. She offers correction if solicited with play. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/2/17 During her initial medical exam, Mango was tense. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Mango so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center, Mango displays a moderate to low activity level. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Mango is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Mango is fearful in the shelter and she becomes uncomfortable with up close handling, stiffening and baring teeth. As we have no known history of her in a home so we feel that she should be placed with a New Hope partner who can reassess her behavior in a stable, experienced, adult only foster home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Mango has shown a high level of anxiety and fear based behavior at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Mango the option to walk away from any social interaction. Mango should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Mango’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Mango would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.)
