05/20/17 20:41 Basic: Manchas is a 8 month old male american pitbull terrier. His owner got him from a breeder in New Jersey and has had him for 7 months. Manchas has had no injuries or health problems and was at the vet in January 2017 for vaccines. Socialization: Manchas is very friendly and outgoing with strangers. He has lived with a 4 year old in the home and with the 4 year old and the adults at home, Manchas is relaxed and playful. He plays with everyone exuberantly. Manchas has not lived with other dogs, however the plays with other dogs exuberantly and a little rough. He is still learning how to socialize. He has not been with cats or other pets in the home. He does not have a bite history. Behavior: Manchas has bathroom accidents inside sometimes, but only once a week if ever. Otherwise he is mostly housetrained. He does chew on things inside and will bark a lot. He isnt bothered by loud noises. Manchas is not bothered when someone touches his food, takes a treat out of his mouth, takes his toy away. He isnt bothered when someone pushes him off the furniture, holds him, disturbs him while sleeping, gives him a bath, touches his feet, brushes him. When someone unfamiliar approaches his house he will bark and is friendly. He is also friendly when someone unfamiliar apporaches his family member and does not bark. For New Family: Manchas is described as friendly, affectionate, playful and excitable. His activity level is high. He loves to run around in the backyard. He also loves to play tug and fetch with rope toys and balls. He loves chewbones. At home he will follow his owner around. He sleeps in his crate with the door open. He has been kept indoor and outdoor with access to the yard. He has been eating Purina dry 3xday. He likes to go on the grass or the cement andis crated when left alone in the house. He does well in the crate for about 6 hours. He knows commands in Spanish: “come, sit, and down”. For exercise he loves to run around the yard and loves brisk walks on leash. WHen off leash he keeps his distance but will come when called. He gets easily distracted by other dogs though and will run towards them to play. During intake Manchas was very friendly with a loose wiggly body. He was jumping on the counselor and licking her. He allowed all handling and collaring and sought attention from the counselor.

A volunteer writes: I googled Manchas as I had no idea what it meant, and there are several translations from the Spanish, all some variation of smudge, or spot. How fun, and I love this name for our handsome black dog! Manchas was surrendered to our care due to landlord issues, and comes with an outstanding resume which includes that he’s friendly and outgoing with strangers (check!), is relaxed and playful with the 4yo child he lived with, plays with other dogs exuberantly (and indeed has earned the distinction of a playgroup greeter dog with us!!), is mostly housetrained when walked regularly (check!), is crate trained for up to 6 hours, sleeps in his crate at night with the door open, loves to play with toys (check!), doesn’t guard his things, and know commands in Spanish, ‘sit’ (sientate–check!), come and down (I didn’t test those). He’s an awesome big puppy, playful, smart, gorgeous, good on leash when walked with the harness, and I’m told by others did well with a simple leash. He’s playful, affectionate, loves meeting new people, in short he’s a gem! He’s active and fun, everything a puppy should be. ‘What’s not to love?’ as my mother would say! During intake he was loose and wiggly, jumping on the counselor and kissing her. He snuggled with me, and a walk to the park went like this: walk walk, hug, walk, walk, walk, hug hug, and repeat! He wants to meet everyone we pass, and gazed wistfully at young kids playing. He’s a terrific big puppy, hoping to find a new family quickly. Let’s not keep him waiting!
05/21/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR

Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/21/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps on and mounts assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Manchas displayed a high level of activity and movement on his assessment. He jumped up on and mounted the assessor. He was social throughout the assessment and allowed all handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Social: These dogs truly enjoy the company of other dogs. They generally get along with all other dogs and can tolerate even very rude or inappropriate behavior. PLAYGROUP: Manchas is exuberantly playful when engaging with male and female dogs in the care center. The behavior department feels that Manchas may be most compatible with other social, highly playful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/20/17 During his initial medical exam, Manchas was active and allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owners describe Machas as a high-energy dog. In the care center he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to the over arousal seen during tag, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable with large, jumpy dogs should have an in depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Manchas jumps up on people a lot. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Social hyper-arousal: Manchas has displayed low threshold for arousal, jumping and mounting when he becomes excited. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used, rewarding Manchas with treats when he is calm in the presence of activity, and walking away from him whenever he displays this behavior.
