01/02/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Mamas is the type of dog that makes you feel good when you’re around her. She has a happy go lucky personality, always ready to greet a new friend with a tail wag, and is grateful for the smallest amount of attention. Aside from being friendly and sweet, she’s also obedient. She walks nicely on the leash and seems very housetrained and is eager to relieve herself. Her former owner says that she knows commands such as sit, stay and stop, and given her high food motivation, can likely be taught a bunch of others. She loves to be groomed, is respectful toward children and even comes back when called while offleash. Though she passes dogs of varying sizes on our walk with a friendly tail wag, she hasn’t been socialized much in her past home with other animals and may react in a fearful way. Mamas’ mellow and gentle demeanor even allowed her to get good remarks on her behavioral evaluation, but she will do best in a home that can help her with her lack of socialization with other dogs. (For now, she should start as being the only dog in the house.) I could go on and on about how great of a dog Mamas is, but in order for you to truly understand, you’ll have to meet her yourself. Ask to see her today!

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with a some previous dog experience) Note: Mamas is highly human social, the “experience” designation is due to her fear around other dogs. We recommend an adopter with some experience in this area and/or a willingness to work on counterconditioning and desensitization to help Mamas feel more comfortable around other dogs. She will need to be managed carefully to keep her and dogs around her safe until this behavior is addressed. _X_Single-dog home, Recommend no dog parks (Mama’s body language –becoming stiff and focusing on other dogs- indicates that he is uncomfortable around other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Mamas be placed in a home with no other dogs until her behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed once Mamas has adequate time to decompress from the shelter environment. The Behavior Department recommends reward-based, force-free training only to desensitize and counter-condition Mamas using toys or treats to help Mamas associate other dogs with positive experiences.)
