04/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Mama previously lived with 3 adults and children ages 5 and 8 years old. The owner stated Mama is playful and respectful towards children in the household. The owner mentioned Mama is house trained, crate trained, has a high activity level and well behaved when home alone. The owner describes Mama as friendly, confident, independent, and fearful towards male figures. It was reported by the owner Mama is fearful towards strangers and reactive towards male figures, when she see a male her hackles will raise she becomes stiff, growls and bare teeth at times when they approach her. The owner mentioned Mama has a previous bite history; she bit the owner cousin and his son but no blood was drawn. The owner believes his cousin came into the house drunk which could’ve trigger Mama. Due to the behavior demonstrated in the shelter the behavior department believes that Mama is not an appropriate candidate for SAFER at this time. At intake it was reported Mama was calm and relaxed, she did allowed all handling. During her medical exam Mama was very fearful, tense and nervous. If you move too quickly by her she will attempt to bite due to her being very scared. In the kennel Mama can be seen growling, snarling, lunging and trying to bite when approaching her kennel. A SAFER assessment will not be conducted due to safety and stress level concerns. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a new hope rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time.
