11/29/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Unknown history Intact, Owner Surrender SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/29/16 Summary: Due to intensity of the behaviors displayed in shelter, Major is not an apppropriate candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. The behavior department believes Major would benefit best from placement with a New Hope Rescue who can further assess in a stable home environment before permanent placement into an adoptive home. PLAYGROUP: MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/22/16 During his initial medical examination, Major appeared tense though tolerated handling upon a slow approach. ENERGY LEVEL: IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Major has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and has remained uncomfortable and difficult to manage throughout his stay, tolerating minimal handling. Major has displayed all appropriate warning signals upon any attempts his handlers have made to engage with him, such as baring teeth upon direct contact and on one occasion, escalating to a snap. The behavior department does believe Major may benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue partner who can further assess his behavior in a more stable environment before permanent placement into an adoptive home. We cannot with much confidence predict how Major may acclimate to a new home environment and recommend intervention with a professional trainer/behaviorist who can aid in addressing any potential issues he may present with outside of the care center. Appropriate and safe management is advised. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Major has snapped during his stay at our care centers and has displayed all appropriate warning signals when uncomfortable. Because he poses such a high bite risk, we believe Major would benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (Major has displayed fearful/defensive behavior during his stay at our care centers, tolerating very minimal handling; any form of direct touch may result in a fearful bite. It is recommended that Major be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Major to new and unfamiliar situations.)
11/26/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
According to Major’s previous owner, Major played roughly with a female dog. 11/26: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Major greets a novel female dog displaying neutral body language. He is sexually motivated, only briefly listening to handler interruptions before attempting to mount again. When the female dog approaches him quickly, Major begins to low growl.
