08/12/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Puppy Magenta is all heart, and all tail wags, and all kisses, and all lively puppy fun. With us as her owner passed away, she’s doing an amazing job of adjusting to her new reality. She loves people, loves being out for a walk and some cuddles, and may be housetrained, using the facilities as soon as we were out the door. As an excited puppy, she may need some reinforcement training, but she’s smart and she loves treats, so, with appropriate rewards, she’ll learn whatever she needs to. In Magenta’s puppy enthusiasm for everything, she can be a bit mouthy and jumpy, so her new person will need to teach her appropriate behavior. And again, she loves treats, so, with positive reinforcement, she’ll be a rockstar. Magenta is a lively color, and our Magenta lives up to her name; she’s exuberant and enthusiastic in everything she does, her eyes filled with wonder at life. What a joy to see the world through a puppy’s eyes! Magenta has played in group, and true to her personality, has engaged in bouncy play, but becomes uncomfortable if play gets too exuberant, and then seeks handler attention. She’s a petite beauty in gleaming coat, ready to join a new family for love, play, training and more love. Who’s the lucky person going to be?
08/10/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/9/17 Unaltered Female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/10/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor consistently, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed. Tag: 3. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, jumps up on Assessor, grabs leash in mouth. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places her open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Summary: Magenta displayed a high level of activity and movement on her assessment, jumping up on the assessor and mouthing. PLAYGROUP: Magenta engages in bouncy play with dogs once comfortable. She has not been completely comfortable with overly exuberant play. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Magent and polite, gently playful dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Magenta was excited and active. Shew allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/9/17 During her initial medical exam, Magenta was active but allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Magenta so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to how quickly Magenta becomes over aroused, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in-depth interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Social hyper-arousal: Magenta displays a high level of activity and escalates quickly when excited. She may need positive reinforcement, force free training to teach him to remain calm in the presence of people. She should be given food rewards for any calm behavior she demonstrates, and when she becomes over aroused people should walk away from him into another room. _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition: While she applies only light pressure, Magenta was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put her teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Junie puts teeth on skin. She should be rewarded with attention and treats when she stops and/or when she is seeking attention in alternate ways.
