03/28/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 03/24/17 Intact female, Stray Other notes: During intake, Madison snapped towards the hand of the counselor when she attempted to scan for a microchip. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 03/28/17 Summary: Madison has allowed some handling in the care center but she is tense and avoids interaction with his new caretakers. She watches and tracks the humans around her carefully at all times and appears to easily startle; Madison has been noted to escalate without warning and for these reasons as well as concern for her stress level, we do not feel it is appropriate to perform a handling assessment at this time DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Madison displays a soft body while greeting a novel male at the gate. Once the pen door is open, she becomes conflicted; offering a play bow and then immediately bares her teeth and air snaps. Madison continues to displays conflicting language when greeting a female dog. They are not introduced. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 03/25/17 During her initial medical examination, Madison was tense though tolerated handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Madison has remained fearful during her stay in the care centers, low energy level; we cannot be certain how this may translate in a new home environment though recommend daily mental and physical stimulation as an outlet to direct any enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Single-dog home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the conflicting language Madison has displayed towards other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Madison not be placed in a home with other dogs at this time. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Madison associate other dogs with things she enjoys like treats or toys. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification to address any underlying anxiety. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Madison has displayed fearful behavior throughout her stay in the care centers and tolerates very minimal forms of direct touch. It is important to always go slow and give Madison the option to walk away from any social interaction. Madison should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Madison’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Madison would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Madison has not acclimated well to the shelter environment. She has generally given clear and protracted warnings though has escalated to threatening behavior without warning (lunging towards handlers). Due to the behaviors observed, we feel that placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification guidance in a stable home environment will best set Madison up for success in a future adoptive home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will likely increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. _X_Kennel presence: While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Madison may show behavior similar to what she is currently demonstrating in her kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations.
