10/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: This adorably cheerful gal is too mature to be a Miss and far too much fun to be a Ma’am, Madame really does suit her and she’s ready to play, snuggle and just plain flirt her way into your heart the minute she meets you! Sure, her in-kennel attitude tends toward the vocal, but that’s only because she’s so excited to find a new friend and once out and about Madame is a perfect little lady. She takes care of business tout suite, meets every person and dog she sees with delighted tail wags and walks around like she owns the park, inspecting all the leaves, trees and newly laid bark chips for interesting scents. Madame lived in relaxed, gentle harmony with another dog and a 10 year old child, she knows commands for sit, stop, go out and no, is crate trained and her former owner described her as both excitable and mellow. In other words, she’s the perfect pet for any occasion! Madame loves to be kissed and hugged, loves her treats and just loves life in general and she’s already spayed and ready to head home with you today. Make her acquaintance at our Manhattan Care Center and discover the secret to warming your heart (and lap) this winter and for many more to come.
10/02/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Altered, Owner Surrender Previously lived with: Adults/children/dog Behavior toward children: Relaxed/respectful Behavior toward dogs: Playful/affectionate Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Excitable, independent, and mellow with a medium activity level. Other notes: Crate trained SAFER ASSESSMENT: 10/2/16 Look: 1. Dog jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth pant. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, playfully jumps up towards end of game. Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog pulls back paw Toy 1. Minimal interest, does not fully engage Dog – dog 2. Dog approaches the helper dog, body soft, tail well above spine level, ears forward. Summary: Soft, open mouth pant (but may be due to medical concerns, dog has severe eye hemorrhages – medical is ordering bloodwork), appeared relaxed. Summary: Madame showed no concern during her behavior assessment. PLAYGROUP: Summary MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 10/01/16 During her initial medical exam Madame allowed all handling and appeared friendly. ENERGY LEVEL: Medium activity level (Observed in home/in shelter) 10/3 UPDATE: Madame has consistently shown human-social and affectionate behavior outside her kennel. However, her kennel presence is poor and she shows severe barrier reactivity that prevents her from being moved to adoptions. She reacts to people walking by with hard barking, growling, and lunging toward the kennel bars. This appears to be shelter-specific behavior as she changes completely when brought outside, but due to her stress level, our desire to decrease her rehearsal of undesired behavior, and the disruption that this behavior causes, it is in her best interest to leave the kennel environment quickly. She remains appropriate for an adopter with an average amount of experience, with the understanding that this barrier reactivity and low threshold for frustration may appear outside the shelter as well. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (Suitable for an adopter with an Average amount of dog experience)
10/04/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When greeting a male dog in through a barrier Madame is loose and wiggly, sniffing for a few seconds then walking away. She becomes frustrated, however, with a lingering greeting and eventually snaps once then, again, walks away. Due to medical concerns, however, she is not collared and introduced off-leash. Her owner reports she “has lived with another dog and was playful and affectionate with the dog. Madame plays gently with other dogs.” The behvairo team feels that Madame should require in-depth consultation on the behaviors observed in our care center, and slow introduction before placement into a home with other dogs. Behaviors observed in the care center are not consistent with those observed by the previous owner at this time.
