09/20/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
Basic Information: Mackey is a 3 year old female, black and white small breed dog. Her owner got Mackey from a friend about 6 months ago but cannot have her anymore due to her behavior around children in the home. Mackey last went to the vet I bet a few months ago and has no known health problems or injuries. Socialization: Arounds strangers she’s fearful and may growl when approaching her. Around children she’s fearful and may be aggressive around children, she lived with a child in the home and when she’d grab her tail she would nip at them. She’s usually tolerant with dogs but may snap at them in they get too close. She’s respectful around cats in the home. Behavior: Mackey may get anxious when left alone and will bark when people leave the home. During storms or fireworks she gets scared and tries to hide. She isn’t bothered when touching her food bowl, toys or bones. She isn’t a fan of the bath and may growl when bathing her but isn’t bothered when you brush her. She may growl when you wake her up and attempt to get her off the furniture. For a New Family to Know: Mackey is friendly, fearful and excitable with a very high activity level. Once and a while she’ll play tug a war but mainly enjoys stuffed toys. At night she sleeps in her bed and she eats both dry and wet food. Her commands she knows are in English and Spanish: sit, go over there, get out and lay down. Off the leash she stays by owner’s side. Behavior During Intake: Mackey had her head down and tail tucked when I approached her. She growled and slowly walked towards me, she did let me scan her for a micro chip but did not allow me to collar her. She remained still and calm during a photo and I had assistance by the owner to place her in the kennel due to her growling

09/24/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 9/20/17 Unaltered Female, Owner Surrender (in previous home for six months) Previously lived with: Adults and cats Behavior toward strangers: Fearful sometimes growls Behavior toward children: Fearful, will nip them Behavior toward dogs: Tolerant but may snap if they get too close Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Not reported Energy level/descriptors: Mackey is described as friendly, fearful and excitable with a very high activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 9/24/17 Summary: Mackey growled at the assessor when approached in the assessment room when she was approached so the assessment was not conducted. Please see her owner surrender profile for information on her behavior in her previous home. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 9/21: When introduced off leash to dogs, Mackey is fearful and keeps to self. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Mackey growled and did not allow handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 9/20/17 During her initial medical exam, Mackey was tense but allowed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Mackey’s previous owner described her as having a high level of activity. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Mackey is currently with touch and novel stimuli, as well as her history of nipping children, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment, and that Mackey has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Mackey’s previous owner reported that she sometimes growls at new people. She has demonstrated this behavior in the care center and has allowed minimal handling. It is important to always go slow and give Mackey the option to walk away from any social interaction. Mackey should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Mackey’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Mackey would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
