03/07/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
03/07/16 19:21 Basic Info: Mack A1066953 is a 2yr old male black & white AMPBT mix who was bought off the street as a puppy & is being surrendered due to the owner no longer having time for him. He hasn’t been seen by a veterinarian and currently has no known health issues. Socialization: Around strangers Mack is very friendly/outgoing. He’s spent time with a 9yr old and was gentle, exuberant, very playful & somewhat rough with them (during play he doesn’t know his strength) also with the adults in the home. Mack hasn’t lived with other animals and when he spots a dog on the streets he barks excitedly and pulls the owner towards them. Mack has never bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: Mack is a very hyper boy. During storms/fireworks he’ll bark. He isn’t bothered by the following: having his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved, being disturbed while sleeping/resting. Mack hasn’t been brushed or had his nails trimmed. During baths Mack struggles to get away. If someone approaches the home/family member Mack jumps on them to greet them & play. For A New Family to Know: Mack is very friendly, affectionate, very playful, confident, & excitable with a very high activity level. The owner likes how friendly he is. Mack enjoys playing with ball, squeaky, rope toys and games of fetch & tug. Mack is mostly an indoor only dog who sleeps in his crate & is walked when the owner is able to & he pulls strongly on his leash. Mack eats dry dog Pedigree food 2x a day and likes any kind of dog treats. He will go in his crate as he’s in a crate most of the day as the owner works long hours. Mack’s known commands are “sit”, “stay” & “come”. Intake Behavior: Mack allowed all handling. He allowed to be scanned (-), collared & taken pictures of. He was a very jumpy, friendly, super wiggly boy who took us quite a few tries to get a picture of. Mack was then asked to go into the kennel and he walked in.
03/13/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: You don’t have to wait until the Fourth of July to be patriotic and let your flag fly. Just ask Mack! 2 years-old and wrapped in a gorgeous brindle coat, Mack was surrendered to our care as his owner no longer had time for him. Not to worry. Their loss is your gain! The moment I unleash Sir Mack in a pen he jumps right up and gives me a giant hug. No formalities or polite “hello”s for this boy. We are old friends right from the start. Soon I come to realize I’m not alone in enjoying Mack’s admiration. Every staff member and volunteer we encounter in our time together receives the same greeting! But right as I start to feel as if I’m maybe not all that special, Mack whips his head around to give me a giant SMOOCH. “You are my favorite!” he seems to say. Sure he likely says that to all the girls, but I smile, blush, and believe it anyway. Tennis balls and rope toys abound in our pen but Mack’s not having any of it. There’s only one thing in our perimeter that he’s interested in – and that’s me! Give Mack a butt scratch, he wants ten more. Rub his velveteen ears? A million more rubs please! This is when I coin my new nickname for Mack, “Loverboy.” This energetic lad is handsome and he knows it and he’s not afraid to show it. He’s also appears to be house broken, sits for treats, and is friendly with other pups. Think you’re immune to this loverboy’s charms? I double “dog” dare you to find out. Mack is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
05/18/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: 5/13/17 Owner surrender, no profile information provided 3/7/16 Full profile Unaltered male, owner surrender Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward strangers: Social/friendly Behavior toward children: Gentle, exuberant, very playful, somewhat rough during play Behavior toward dogs: Barks and pulls toward dogs he sees on walks Behavior toward cats: Unknown Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Unknown. Owner reports not walking consistently. Energy level/descriptors: Very friendly, affectionate, very playful, confident, excitable with a very high activity level. Other notes: Mack is crate trained, sleeps in his crate, and will walk in when asked. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 5/16/17 Look: 3. Dog is difficult to position, jumps on the Assessor, whining and panting, high energy and movement. Sensitivity: 2. Dog is active and focused on other stimuli, open mouth panting, displaying high movement between attempts. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog pulls back paw quickly, movement in between attempts. Squeeze 2: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog sniffs, then turns away. This may be due to environment as owner reports Mack enjoys playing with ball, squeaky, rope toys and games of fetch & tug. Summary: Mack was difficult to position for up close handling, particularly on Look and Squeeze, attempted to increase distance between dog and assessor, but tolerated handling once positioned. PLAYGROUP: Mack is conflicted when interacting with a female. He has a loose body and bows but will bare teeth and bark at her. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/16/17 During his veterinary exam, Mack was soft-bodied and social, and allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports that Mack has a very high activity level which matches what we have seen in the care center. Mack was reportedly crated majority of the day while owner worked long hours. Mack will need mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend food puzzles and long lasting chews along with walks, runs, exercise and play to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Mack is showing a heightened level of stress and frustration with being kenneled. He showed similar behaviors when kenneled during his previous stay. He has been barking constantly and appears to panic in his kennel. We do not feel we can meet his behavioral needs in a kennel environment any longer, and we recommend that he move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially in the behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_House soiling – It was not reported whether Mack is housebroken, but a previous owner reports not walking regularly and crated for long hours. To positively reinforce eliminating outside, Mack should have a consistent feeding and walking schedule, 2-3 times per day, with rewards of treats and praise whenever he eliminates outdoors. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_Anxiety – Mack continually whined and focused on other stimuli during his assessment. This behavior was not reported at intake, though it has been seen while kenneled as well. Mack may benefit from a structured routine so he knows what to expect which may quell some uncertainty. _X_Strength/leash pulling – Owner reports Mack pulls hard on leash. Mack is a large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which helps diminish strength through leverage, and that Mack be trained usig positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
03/08/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Mack has been uncomfortable during off-leash interaction with other dogs. He has mostly been avoidant of greeting and solicitation. His previous owner reports that “Mack hasn’t lived with other animals and when he spots a dog on the streets he barks excitedly and pulls the owner towards them.”, so behavior in-home with dogs remains unknown. At this time, Mack may be most comofrtable as the only resident dog in a home before his behavior around them can be followed up on. When off leash with other dogs, Mack runs away from greeting and offers a small lip curl when approached again. 3/9 update: Mack avoids interaction and instead jumps on handlers in the pen. 3/11 update: Mack is conflicted when interacting with a female. He has a loose body and bows but will bare teeth and bark at her.

3/9 SAFER
Mack came to us as an owner surrender due to the owner doesn’t have the time to properly care for him anymore. According to the owner Mack is very social and outgoing when meeting strangers and playing with children, but can sometimes play a bit rough. He was very interested in interacting with the assessor when entering the behavior room. He allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining soft body language. While Mack did have soft body language throughout the assessment, he was bit difficult to position due to his high energy. Mack followed the assessor at the end of the leash with soft body language. Due to Mack energy he would often jump on the assessor a bit strongly with loose body language. He only displayed minimal interest in the toy on this portion of the assessment. Mack seems to be a high energy dog that would benefit from a lot of mental and physical stimulation. The behavior department believes that Mack can go to a home with an average amount of dog experience.
Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth, dog licks hands while lips are long.
Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft.
Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw.
Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw.
Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog smells, licks and mouths, then turns away.
SAFER update:
Mack is becoming increasingly stressed in the kennel environment. He barks constantly and does not respond to treats or any forms of in-kennel enrichment in attempts to calm him down. In order to curb any further stress, Mack should leave the care center as quickly as possible. Out of his kennel he remains calm and social with handlers; the behavior department believes that Mack can go to a home with an average amount of dog experience.
